What Is A Permanent Resident?
A permanent resident is someone who has immigrated to Canada and been given permanent resident status. Permanent residents are not Canadian citizens, they are citizens of other countries.
Requirements To Maintain Canada Permanent Residence
To maintain Canada permanent residence, candidates must be physically present in Canada for 730 days (two years) in the last five years. The 730 days do not need to be continuous.
To track time in Canada, the Canadian government recommends candidates keep a travel journal. However, candidates can also ask a border official when entering Canada, and will also be told when renewing a Permanent Resident Card if they are eligible.

Losing Permanent Resident Status
Just because a candidate does not meet physical presence requirements, they do not automatically lose permanent resident status. An official decision must be made.
Candidates lose their permanent resident status if:
- An adjudicator decides they are no longer a permanent resident after an inquiry.
- They voluntarily renounce their status.
- A removal order made against them comes into force.
- They become a Canadian citizen.
