Canada has renewed special immigration measures for foreign national family members of victims of the Ukraine plane disaster.
The measures are aimed at foreign nationals unable to leave Canada because of border closures related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Those who qualify are able to extend their stay in Canada and will be exempt from paying the usual fees.
Of the 176 passengers and crew that died when Iran mistakenly shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 on January 8, 63 were Canadian.

Who Qualifies?
- Holders of a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) or Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) that will expire before January 16, 2021.
- Members of the family of a victim of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752.
- Candidates have until January 16, 2021 to have their TRV or visitor record extended or restored at no cost.
What Fees Are Waived?
- TRP extension ($200)
- Restoration of temporary resident status ($200)
- Extension of authorization to remain in Canada as a temporary resident ($100)
How to Apply
Candidates who received a valid TRV or status document (visitor record) between January 10 and June 30, 2020, under the previous measures, can apply for an extension of their status.
Candidates must submit an application before their current status expires. When a candidate applies, they benefit from ‘implied status’ until their application is processed.
If a candidate’s temporary resident status has expired, they can restore it within 90 days of the expiry date.
