Appendix E – National Occupational Classification (NOC) 4412: Home Support Workers, Housekeepers and Related Occupations
Home support workers usually provide personal care and companionship for seniors, people with disabilities and convalescent clients. They usually provide care within the client’s residence. The home support worker might well also reside in the client’s residence on occasions. These people typically find employment with home care and support agencies as well as private households. In many cases, they could be self-employed too. Housekeepers provide housekeeping and other home management services. They perform their duties in private households and other non-institutional, residential settings.

The Main Duties
Home support workers would typically perform some or all of the following duties:

Providing care and companionship for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation, convalescence or family disruption

Administering bedside and personal care to clients such as aiding in ambulating, bathing, personal hygiene, dressing and undressing
-
Planning and preparing meals and special diets (including feeding or assisting in feeding clients)

Performing routine health-related duties such as changing non-sterile dressing, assisting in the administration of medications and collecting specimens under the general direction of home care agency supervisors or nurses and,

Performing routine housekeeping duties such as laundry, washing the dishes and making beds
Similarly, housekeepers would typically perform some or all of the following duties:

Performing housekeeping and other home management duties under the general instructions of the employer

Planning and preparing meals independently or with the employer (this includes serving the meals as well) and,

Caring for the children
The Employment Requirements
The authorities require individuals working in these professions to have:

Some secondary school education

Some home management experience
-
Completed some college or other courses in home support

First aid certification and,
-
Completed a training program in care of the elderly, care of persons with disabilities, convalescent care or in a related field
