Appendix K – National Occupational Classification (NOC) 3011: Nursing Coordinators and Supervisors
Nursing coordinators and supervisors will typically coordinate and supervise the activities of:

Registered nurses

Registered psychiatric nurses
-
Licensed practical nurses and,
-
Other nursing personnel in the provision of patient care
These individuals will usually work in health care institutions such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and in nursing agencies.

The Main Duties
Nursing coordinators and supervisors would typically need to perform some or all of the following duties:

Supervising the registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other nursing personnel

Evaluating the patients’ needs and ensuring that the patients receive the required nursing care

Setting up and coordinating nursing services in conjunction with other health services
-
Ensuring that the patients receive quality nursing care and that nursing personnel follow the appropriate administrative procedures
-
Administering the nursing unit budget and ensuring that supplies and equipment are readily available
-
Assisting in the selection, evaluation and professional development of nursing personnel
-
Collaborating on research projects pertaining to nursing and medical care and multidisciplinary services and,
-
Providing direct patient care (if needed)
The Employment Requirements
The authorities require that the individuals working as nursing coordinators and supervisors:

Complete a university, college or other approved registered nursing or registered psychiatric nursing program

Complete courses in management studies or obtain diplomas, degrees or certificates in management or administration

Register as registered nurses with the appropriate provincial or territorial regulatory body or register as registered psychiatric nurses in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and the Yukon and,
-
Acquire clinical experience as registered nurses or registered psychiatric nurses
Additional Information
As these individuals acquire experience, they could progress to management positions such as director of nursing.
