Appendix L – National Occupational Classification (NOC) 0311: Managers in Health Care
This unit group typically comprises managers who plan, organise, direct, control and evaluate the delivery of various health care services. These health care services could include:

Diagnosis and treatment and,
-
Nursing and therapy
As such, they would discharge their duties regarding health care services within institutions and in other settings that provide health care services. In many cases, they would be working in hospitals, medical clinics, nursing homes and other health care organisations.

The Main Duties
Managers in health care would typically perform some or all of the following duties:

Planning, organising, directing, controlling and evaluating the delivery of health care services within a department of a health care institution or in other settings that provide health care services

Consulting with the boards of directors and senior managers for maintaining and establishing standards for the provision of health care services

Developing evaluation systems for monitoring the quality of health care given to patients
-
Monitoring the use of various diagnostic services, in-patient beds and facilities for ensuring the effective use of resources
-
Developing and implementing plans for new programs, special projects, new material and equipment acquisitions and future staffing levels in their department or establishment
-
Planning and controlling departmental or establishment budgets
-
Representing the department of establishment at meetings with government officials, the public, the media and various other organisations
-
Supervising health care supervisors and professionals and,
-
Recruiting health care staff of the department or the establishment
It is worth highlighting that managers in health care will need to specialise in administering the provision of specific health care services. These health care services could include:

Dietetics

Clinical medicine
-
Laboratory medicine
-
Nursing
-
Physiotherapy or,
-
Surgery
The Employment Requirements
The authorities require that:

Administrators of departments such as surgery, clinical medicine or laboratory medicine possess the education and training that specialist physicians tend to have

Administrators of other departments such as nursing, dietetics or physiotherapy have the education and training that medical professionals in those departments typically have

Managers in health care possess several years of experience in the relevant profession (this includes supervisory experience) and,

Managers in health care possess certifications in the relevant profession
Additional Information
It is worth highlighting that there is little or no mobility between departments in different medical specialisations. In addition, progression to senior management positions in health care services is only possible after acquiring the appropriate levels of experience.
