Aug 21, 2019 – Canada is in the process of carrying out a managed, staged increase in its immigration levels that will see more than one million newcomers welcomed over three years in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
The Liberal government established 300,000 immigrants per year as the ‘new normal’ since coming to power in 2015. Previously, annual immigration numbers had been in the region of 250,000 to 270,000.

Over the next three years, the figures are expected to grow, starting with a planned 330,800 in 2019, 341,000 in 2020 and 350,000 in 2021.
The immigration levels plan was announced in October 2018.
How Many Economic Immigrants Come to Canada Each Year?
Economic immigrants are the mainstay of the Canada immigration levels plan.
The category includes federal skilled immigrants welcomed through Express Entry, as well as business immigrants, PNP immigrants and Quebec immigrants.
Canada expect to welcome 191,600 economic immigrants in 2019, 195,800 in 2020 and 202,300 in 2021.

How Many Family Class Immigrants Come to Canada Each Year?
After economic immigrants, family class immigrants are the second largest group.
Canada’s family reunification sponsorship immigration program covers spouses, partners, children, parents and grandparents.
While the category will see increases over the next three years, they are not as large as the economic immigration increases.
Canada plans to welcome 88,500 family class immigrants in 2019, 91,000 in 2019 and 91,000 again in 2020.

How Many Refugee and Protected People Come to Canada Each Year?
Canada has various categories of refugees and protected persons that it welcomes each year.
It is also known for how it responds to international crises, as it has shown with welcoming Syrians and Yazidis from Iraq in recent years.
Canada’s private sponsorship refugee program has been heralded all over the world for how it welcomes and supports vulnerable people.
Like the other categories, refugees and protected person numbers are expected to rise over the next three years.
The category is expected to see 46,450 welcomed in 2019, 49,700 in 2020 and 51,700 in 2021.
