The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). It gives skilled workers, international graduates and entrepreneurs a pathway to Canadian permanent residence by nominating people whose skills match the province’s labour market and economic priorities.
All AAIP worker streams now operate on an invitation-only basis. Candidates first submit a Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI), which since April 7, 2026 carries a $135 fee, and only candidates selected in a draw can submit a full application. Entrepreneur streams use a separate Entrepreneur Expression of Interest.
A provincial nomination does not by itself grant permanent residence. Nominees then apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Candidates nominated through the Alberta Express Entry Stream receive an additional 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, which effectively guarantees an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in a following federal Express Entry draw.
What Is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program?
The AAIP is Alberta’s economic immigration program, run by the Government of Alberta within the nomination limits set each year by IRCC. It was known as the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) until February 2022.
The program has two families of streams:
- Worker streams: the Alberta Opportunity Stream, the Alberta Express Entry Stream (including the Accelerated Tech Pathway, the Law Enforcement Pathway and priority-sector selections), the Dedicated Health Care Pathways, the Rural Renewal Stream and the Tourism and Hospitality Stream.
- Entrepreneur streams: the Rural Entrepreneur Stream, the Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, the Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream and the Farm Stream.
In 2026 Alberta says it is prioritizing worker-stream draws and nominations for occupations in key sectors such as health care, technology, construction, manufacturing, aviation and agriculture, as well as communities designated under the Rural Renewal Stream.
Alberta’s 2026 Nomination Allocation
IRCC sets the number of nominations each province can issue. On August 10, 2026, Alberta announced that IRCC had provided an additional 200 nominations, raising its total 2026 allocation to 6,603.
Alberta’s processing page (last updated October 7, 2026) showed 5,541 nominations already issued and 1,062 spaces remaining, with the allocation split across streams as follows:
| Stream or pathway | 2026 allocation |
|---|---|
| Alberta Opportunity Stream | 3,562 |
| Rural Renewal Stream | 1,057 |
| Alberta Express Entry – Accelerated Tech Pathway | 619 |
| Alberta Express Entry – priority sector draws and other initiatives | 619 |
| Dedicated Health Care Pathways | 518 |
| Tourism and Hospitality Stream | 156 |
| Entrepreneur streams | 60 |
| Alberta Express Entry – Law Enforcement Pathway | 12 |
Nominations for practice-ready physicians and Francophones who meet federal criteria can also be issued through additional federal spaces that do not count toward Alberta’s 6,603 allocation. Alberta notes that allocation figures can be redistributed between streams at any time.
How the Worker Expression of Interest System Works
Since September 30, 2024, a candidate must have a Worker Expression of Interest in the pool to be considered for any AAIP worker stream. The Alberta Expression of Interest is an online profile, not an application, in which you self-declare your education, work experience, language ability, age, Alberta job offer and other factors.
- Points: each WEOI is scored out of a maximum of 100 points using Alberta’s published WEOI points grid. There is no minimum score to submit a WEOI.
- Additional information: Alberta also collects details that earn no points but can be used in draws, including your IRCC status, the NOC code of your Alberta job offer, your employer’s industry (NAICS code) and, since February 25, 2026, the wage and hours of work of your job offer.
- Fee: since April 7, 2026, submitting a WEOI costs $135, payable online within 24 hours of submission. An unpaid WEOI is cancelled automatically and does not enter the pool.
- Validity: a WEOI stays in the pool for 12 months. For WEOIs created on or after April 7, 2026, the year runs from the date the fee was paid. If you are not selected within that time, you must submit a new WEOI and pay the fee again.
- One profile only: you can only hold one WEOI, and you cannot create one while you have an existing Entrepreneur EOI or a draft or active AAIP application.
- Editing: since May 26, 2026, candidates can edit a submitted WEOI in the AAIP portal. Editing does not extend the WEOI’s validity.
AAIP selects candidates based on WEOI scores, provincial labour market needs and priorities, available nominations and application volumes. Score is not the only factor, and you may be invited to a stream other than the one you indicated as your preference.
How to Apply to an AAIP Worker Stream
Applying to an Alberta worker stream follows three steps:
- Submit a WEOI and pay the $135 fee. Check that you meet the eligibility requirements of at least one worker stream first, using Alberta’s Eligibility Explorer if helpful. Rural Renewal Stream candidates need an endorsement letter from a designated community at the time they submit their WEOI.
- Receive an invitation. If selected in a draw, you receive an email inviting you to apply to a specific stream or pathway. You have 15 days to create a draft application, or you can decline the invitation and return to the pool.
- Submit and pay for your application. Once you create an application, you have 30 days to complete it, upload every document on the worker stream checklist and pay the $1,500 application fee. Incomplete or ineligible applications are declined and fees are not refunded.
Alberta Express Entry Stream candidates must also maintain an active federal Express Entry profile. AAIP Streams and Pathways
Alberta Opportunity Stream
The Alberta Opportunity Stream was designed to simplify the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program application process, reduce waiting times and make the system fairer for candidates and employers
Express Entry Stream
Alberta Express Entry allows Alberta to nominate a limited number of qualified candidates from federal Express Entry pool.

On August 12, 2026, Alberta added more detail to the entrepreneur stream pages on the existing economic establishment requirement, which also applies during the monitoring phase after a business application is approved.
AAIP Draws
Alberta conducts AAIP draws from the WEOI pool as needed. Draws are not regularly scheduled, and Alberta does not disclose all of the parameters it uses. Each draw targets a specific stream, pathway or priority sector and publishes a minimum score and the number of invitations.
Recent examples from Alberta’s draw table include:
- October 7, 2026 – Alberta Express Entry Stream, priority sectors (aviation): 22 invitations, minimum score 56
- October 2, 2026 – Alberta Opportunity Stream: 123 invitations, minimum score 54
- September 29, 2026 – Alberta Express Entry Stream, priority sectors (general): 200 invitations, minimum score 64
- September 24, 2026 – Rural Renewal Stream: 131 invitations, minimum score 51
- September 22, 2026 – Accelerated Tech Pathway: 100 invitations, minimum score 59
As of early October 2026, more than 34,000 WEOIs were in the selection pool, about 21,700 of them identifying the Alberta Opportunity Stream. With demand far above the available nominations, a strong score and a job offer in a priority sector both matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)?
The AAIP is Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program. It nominates skilled workers, international graduates and entrepreneurs whose skills meet the province's labour market needs. A nomination allows the candidate to apply to IRCC for permanent residence, and Alberta can issue only a limited number each year – 6,603 in 2026.
Does it cost anything to submit an Alberta Worker Expression of Interest?
Yes. Since April 7, 2026, Alberta charges a $135 fee to submit a Worker Expression of Interest, which must be paid online within 24 hours or the profile is cancelled. The fee covers a WEOI valid for 12 months and is not refunded if you are not invited. Before April 7, 2026, there was no WEOI fee.
Can I apply directly to an AAIP worker stream?
No. You can only apply to an AAIP worker stream if you are invited. You must first submit a Worker Expression of Interest, and if you are selected in a draw, AAIP emails you an invitation to apply to a specific stream or pathway within 15 days.
How does Alberta select candidates from the WEOI pool?
Alberta holds draws as needed, selecting candidates based on their WEOI score out of 100, provincial labour market needs and priorities, available nominations and application volumes. Draws often target specific streams or sectors, such as health care, technology, construction, manufacturing, aviation and agriculture.
How does an Alberta nomination affect Express Entry?
A nomination through the Alberta Express Entry Stream, including its Accelerated Tech, Law Enforcement and priority-sector pathways, adds 600 points to your Comprehensive Ranking System score. That effectively guarantees an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence in a following federal Express Entry draw.
What are the main AAIP streams?
The worker streams are the Alberta Opportunity Stream, the Alberta Express Entry Stream, the Dedicated Health Care Pathways, the Rural Renewal Stream and the Tourism and Hospitality Stream. The entrepreneur streams are the Rural Entrepreneur, Graduate Entrepreneur, Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur and Farm streams, each with its own requirements.
