June 7, 2019 – Canada unemployment has dropped to the lowest level in 43 years at 5.4 per cent, according to the latest federal government data.
The Statistics Canada Labour Market Survey for May shows employment growth of 453,000 in the last 12 months, building on a strong set of results for April.
Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick all saw jobs gains mirroring the impressive national-level results.

Demographically, men aged 25 to 54 saw major increases in May, adding 35,000 of the 48,000 jobs added in the age-group as a whole.
The unemployment rate for men in this age-group fell to 4.7 per cent, while core-aged women saw unemployment decline by 0.7 percentage points in May to 4.1 per cent, again the lowest point since 1976.
Both core-aged men (121,000) and core-aged women (127,000) have recorded impressive increases sin the last 12 months.

Provincial Canada Jobs Picture
Provincially, Ontario spearheaded the progress in May with an employment increase of 21,000 and an unemployment drop of 0.8 percentage points to 5.2 per cent.
Employment has now risen by 222,000 in the last 12 months in Canada’s most populous province.
British Columbia remains top of the pile in terms of unemployment, adding 17,000 jobs in May and witnessing an unemployment rate drop from 4.6 per cent to 4.3 per cent. B.C. remains the only province with unemployment below the 5 per cent mark, having added 108,000 jobs since May 2018.
Nova Scotia added 4,500 jobs in May for an unemployment rate of 6.5 per cent. Employment has risen by 15,000 in the last 12 months in the Atlantic province.

Neighbouring New Brunswick also witness strong gains, adding 3,000 jobs and reducing unemployment from 8 per cent to 7.2 per cent.
After a strong April, Quebec remained solid in May with little change to either its record-low employment (5 per cent) or employment levels.
Canada Jobs By Industry
Looking at the industry picture, there were 20,000 more people working in health care and social assistance in May, spearheaded by Ontario. The sector has added 89,000 jobs in the last 12 months.
Professional, scientific and technical services saw a rise of 17,000 jobs, also lead by Ontario but with contributions from New Brunswick and Saskatchewan. Some 60,000 jobs have been added in the last 12 months in this sector.
What Are Canada’s Top Technology Occupations?
A further 1,000 jobs were added in the transportation and warehousing industry, focused in Ontario and Alberta. The industry has registered year-over-year gains of 60,000.
The number of self-employed workers rose by 62,000 in May for year-over-year gains of 93,000.
Neither the private nor public sector registered much change in May, with the number of private sector jobs rising by 335,000 in the last 12 months.
