Here is a list of the documentation a newcomer to Canada will need to study, temporarily work, or become a permanent resident of the country.
All applicants seeking permanent residence in Canada need to provide:

- a birth certificate, if declaring dependent children;
- an adoption certificate if the dependent child being declared was adopted;
- use of representative form, if a representative is helping the foreign national with the application;
- a common-law union form if the applicant has put their marital status as common-law;
- a marriage certificate, if the applicant has put their marital status as married;
- a divorce certificate and legal separation agreement if the applicant’s marital status is divorced;
- a death certificate, if the applicant has noted they are widowed;
- proof of work experience;
- proof of funds, and;
- other mandatory documents where applicable.
Proper Documentation Is Important to Ensure Timely Processing
When those documents are missing from a foreign national’s application, it can be rejected or delayed.
Other documents which may be needed if they are included in a personalized documentation checklist can include:
- proof of relationship to a relative in Canada;
- digital photos to confirm the applicant’s identity;
- other name to confirm aliases;
- the Authority To Release Personal Information To A Designated Individual form, and;
- any other documents that may be relevant to the application.
When applying under the Express Entry system, applicants should also include:
- their language test result;
- Provincial Nominee Program nomination, if they have one, and;
- the written job offer from a Canadian employer and certifications of qualifications for the applicable trades issued by a Canadian province or territory.
“No matter what path you choose, keep yourself informed,” advises Immigration Minister Sean Fraser. “All necessary application documents can be found on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.”
