Apr 15, 2018 – Seven out of Canada’s 10 provinces are represented in the latest list of the best cities to find a job released by the Bank of Montreal.
The even spread shows how Canada’s labour market is performing well across the country, emerging from a period of oil-related decline in Alberta, and outright gains in British Columbia and Ontario.
Topping the quarterly BMO Regional Labour Market Report Card is Moncton, New Brunswick, in a major victory for the Atlantic provinces. The city is also the biggest mover in the last 12 months, up 32 places on its position a year ago. Employment in Moncton has risen nearly 10 per cent over the course of the last year.

Looking for Work? Here Are the Top 10 Cities in Canada to Find a Job
Guelph Ontario is Canada’s Jobs Powerhouse
“Moncton sits at the top of the pack, which will probably raise some eyebrows, but keep in mind these smaller cities can move a lot,” the report says. “While the city has attracted some increased business investment, the level of employment sat near a six-year low in 2017, hence the high growth rate.”
Major cities also feature strongly in the top 10, with Vancouver coming in at No 4 and Toronto at No 6. Montreal sits in 16thplace on the list of the 33 most populated cities. When Canada’s major cities are prospering, it sets a trend for the rest of the country.
Six out of Canada’s 10 provinces are seeing job growth of up to 3 per cent, with only Newfoundland & Labrador showing a negative over the last year. Alberta’ jobs growth was flat a year ago, but is now at 1.8 per cent.
While British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec are still performing well, “the divide is not nearly as wide in their favour as it was over the past two years,” the BMO report notes, “nor is it swinging back into Alberta’s favour as it was for much of the decade through 2014.”
