June 8, 2018 – International students from select Asian countries can get access to fast Study Permit processing under the new Student Direct Stream.
Canada’s immigration department says the new stream is for applicants from China, India, Vietnam and the Philippines. It may also be extended to applicants from Kenya and Senegal in due course.
Do you qualify to study in Canada? Answer our Free Study Questionnaire
Candidates must demonstrate the financial resources and language skills needed to succeed in Canadian education to access the stream.
Under the SDS, candidates must demonstrate moderate language skills, pay their first year of tuition up front and purchase a $10,000 Guaranteed Investment Certificate.
How Do I Qualify for the Student Direct Stream?
The first step is to be accepted by a designated Canadian learning institution. Applicants must then submit up front proof of:
- Tuition payment for the first year of study
- Purchase of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of $10,000
- Completion of an upfront medical examination
- Qualifying score of at least 6 for English (IELTS), or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens score of 7 for French (TEF), or graduation from a Canadian-curriculum high school.
If the pilot program is successful, it will be expanded in 2019 to possibly include Kenyan and Senegalese applications, as part of IRCC’s push to increase Francophone immigration.
Strong language skills are a major component of the Canada Express Entry System, putting students who qualify for SDS in a strong position to go on and achieve permanent residence after graduation.

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen said: “IRCC recognizes the tremendous economic, cultural and social benefits that international students bring to Canada.
“We are committed to improving client service for all applicants, including students, as we continue to find new and efficient ways to reduce processing times.”
Canada Covets International Students
Canada has targeted international students since the current federal Liberal government came to power in 2015. They are viewed as key new permanent residents, given their age, Canadian education, Canadian life experience and language ability.
IRCC tweaked the Express Entry System in November 2016 to introduce more points for international graduates from Canadian universities.
What are the Extra CRS Points for Canadian Education?
Education Level | Number of Points |
High school | 0 |
One or two-year post secondary | 15 |
Three-year post secondary, master’s, professional degree or doctorate | 30 |
How to Get A Post Graduation Work Permit
International graduates can also access the Post Graduation Work Permit, allowing them to work after graduation. The work experience gained can then be used to strengthen an application for permanent residence.
