Immigration officials in the Atlantic Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador are looking for non-profit organizations, community, ethnocultural and multicultural organizations, colleges and universities, towns and cities and indigenous governments to offer settlement services.
“The Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills, through the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism, is calling for proposals for projects under the Newfoundland and Labrador Settlement and Integration Grants program,” notes the province’s website.
Under its funding streams, Newfoundland and Labrador offers up to $300,000 for projects to help newcomers with their economic integration and settlement into communities throughout the province.
The economic integration stream supports and promotes newcomers’ economic advancement through labour market attachment, including advancing employers’ capacity to hire and support newcomer employees.
That includes projects that seek to:
- improve labour market access for newcomers;
- offer foreign credential recognition navigation;
- aid in job creation and labour market connections;
- build workplace and industry-specific language training, and;
- provide capacity-building initiatives for employers.
The settlement supports and services stream funds projects that aid in enhancing communities’ abilities to attract, welcome, and retain newcomers at all stages of their settlement journey through a comprehensive range of services throughout the province.
That includes:
- pre-arrival settlement programming;
- settlement services;
- place-based immigration initiatives;
- building welcoming communities;
- projects to improve or expand access to settlement services;
- capacity-building initiatives for service provider organizations;
- intercultural competency and public outreach, and;
- elimination of racial discrimination.
“Ineligible applicants include individuals, businesses, private-sector companies, and for-profit firms; funding bodies whose sole mandate is to award grants or funding; Immigration agents, consultants, or recruiters; and unregistered organizations,” notes the Newfoundland and Labrador website.
The latest data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveals Newfoundland and Labrador welcomed 5,485 new permanent residents last year, up 56.9 per cent from the 3,495 the previous year.
