Muslims are increasingly feeling at home in Canada and feel the country is moving in the right direction, according to a new survey.
More than 80 per cent said they were proud to be Canadian, while 90 per cent felt positive about the new federal government and its policies.
The figures, presented by the Environics Institute, show a significant increase since the same survey was last conducted ten years ago.
Furthermore, 84 per cent believe they are treated better in Canada than they would be in other western countries.
Meanwhile, 35 per cent say they have been discriminated against because of their religion.
The survey asked a sample of 600 adult Canadian Muslims a series of questions about their lives in the country.
Muneeb Nasir from the Olive Tree Foundation, one of the lead partners on the study, said: “The survey enables us to look beyond the rhetoric and perceptions about Muslims and get a picture of how Canadian Muslims are faring and how they are regarded.
“Quite importantly, it shows that Muslims take their citizenship seriously and are very proud to be Canadian.
“However, despite this strong attachment, the fact that 35 per cent of Muslims have reported experiencing discrimination or unfair treatment in the past five years is concerning.”
