Erica, welcome to the team. To kick things off, what inspired you to specialize in immigration law, and what keeps you passionate about this field?
Thank you for the warm welcome. I am very excited to be part of the immigration.ca team and to contribute in this capacity.
I was drawn to immigration law because it brings together legal practice, public policy and the deeply human stories at their core. It is a practice area where legal strategy has an immediate, real-world impact on clients and their long-term future.
On a personal level, I have always been fascinated by generational history. In many homes, there are often one or two family members who take it upon themselves to serve as the historians – exploring archival materials and asking the deeper questions. In my family, I am certainly this type of curious person. Uncovering my own family’s journey has reinforced for me that immigration is not merely abstract policy, but a profound testament to legacy, courage and opportunity.
Professionally, I am inspired by the discipline and thoughtful balance this field demands. Whether advising a business as they navigate the process of workforce expansion or guiding a family through a life-changing transition, the stakes are invariably high. Immigration law calls for technical precision, strategic thinking, and adaptability, but above all, it requires empathy.
In an ever-evolving regulatory landscape, the opportunity to guide clients through their most critical chapters is what keeps me passionate about my work. A strong application and a sound strategy can meaningfully shape the future of an individual, a family or an organization. As policies and programs continue to shift, strategy must remain dynamic and forward-thinking. Being entrusted with this responsibility at such pivotal moments is something I genuinely value and take very seriously.
How do you approach a first-time consultation to ensure a client feels both heard and informed?
For me, an initial consultation is about building trust and ensuring that a client feels genuinely heard.
I always begin by listening carefully. Before discussing strategy, it is important that I fully understand the client’s background, goals, concerns, and timeline. Immigration matters are rarely one-dimensional. There are often personal, professional, and emotional layers interconnected. A client should feel that their circumstances are genuinely understood, rather than distilled into a simple checklist of eligibility criteria.
From there, my role is to provide structure for next steps and to bring clarity to the process through a concise roadmap. Immigration law can feel overwhelming as there are multiple pathways, fluctuating policies, and conflicting information online. I understand the complexities involved and aim to provide clear options while also explaining why certain strategies may be stronger than others, including potential risks and realistic timelines.
By the end of the consultation, my goal is for the client to feel informed and empowered. Clarity replaces uncertainty. When clients understand where they stand within the broader immigration framework, they are better positioned to make confident and strategic decisions about their future.
Navigating the Current Landscape
In your experience, what is the most underrated factor that can make or break a successful application?
One of the most underrated factors in a successful application is credibility. Credibility is built through consistency, clarity, and careful presentation.
Immigration officers assess far more than whether a candidate meets the minimum criteria. They evaluate whether the overall record is consistent, credible, and persuasive. Every document, date, job title, and supporting detail must align. Even minor discrepancies or insufficiently explained or supported aspects of a file can raise concerns that lead to delays or refusals.
The Canadian Perspective
Since helping people move to Canada is your life’s work, what is your favorite part about the Canadian lifestyle that you think newcomers will love most?
What I appreciate most about the Canadian lifestyle, and what I believe many newcomers grow to love, is the strong sense of community and respect. I have spent my whole life in Canada, and it is something I do not take for granted. You can walk through a neighbourhood and feel a sense of familiarity and receptiveness. Extraordinary natural beauty is always within reach – from lakes and forests to mountains and coastal views – alongside vibrant cultural and social spaces such as museums, festivals, markets, and public events that bring people together.
There is a balance between comfort and discovery – whether it is trying a new restaurant, enjoying local events, spending time outdoors, or rallying around local sports teams. That everyday mix of community, nature, and shared experiences is what makes life in Canada feel both grounded and exciting at the same time.
When you aren’t navigating complex legal files, how do you like to spend your time?
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends at one of our favourite local restaurants or cozying up at home with a good series on Netflix. Spending time outdoors is another way I recharge. I look forward to long walks with friends and my puppy whenever possible. I am also a huge sports fan, especially when it comes to hockey, so game nights are something I always look forward to during the winter season!
