The Marriage Certificate
Purpose: For validating the marital status claims of the applicant.
Document Requirements:
- The applicant would need to provide this document only if:
- The applicant indicates a marital status of being married
- The marriage would need to be valid under the law of the country where it took place and under Canadian law
- It is worth mentioning that a marriage performed in an embassy or consulate would need to comply with the law of the host country where it took place and not the country of nationality of the embassy or consulate
- For marriages that take place in Canada, the applicant would need to provide a copy of the marriage certificate issued by the province or the territory where the marriage took place
- For marriages that take place outside Canada, the applicant would need to provide a copy of a legal certificate issued by the country, the territory or the region where the marriage took place
