The global recruiting firm Hydrogen has released the results of a survey in which Canada has ranked among the world’s top destinations for expat professionals, with Vancouver among the top cities.
Hydrogen’s report, based on the findings of a survey by ESCP Europe of more than 2,400 professionals across 100 countries, lists Canada as holding the No. 5 position in the list of relocation countries, behind the United States, Britain, Australia and Switzerland. Where cities are concerned, Vancouver was ranked No. 8, behind London, New York, Sydney, San Francisco, Singapore, Zurich and Paris.
The report highlights the fact that even though the balance of economic power may be shifting from West to East, the majority of professionals still prefer to work in English speaking countries, and although there is an understanding that the emerging markets of the East are important, cultural barriers, coupled with a perceived ‘distance’ from home, make them less appealing.
However, the survey also found that the percentage of people who are willing to work abroad has risen, and that one in five respondents had no city preference and were willing to go where job opportunities existed.
“The current economic climate has proved less of an obstacle and more of an opportunity to gaining international experience,” according to Alev Kilic of ESCP Europe. “As companies speed up expansion into new markets, the demand for qualified and experienced professionals is intensifying. Companies are increasingly taking a global outlook and they need people with international experience to spearhead market expansion.”
