{"id":99788,"date":"2024-02-12T08:17:27","date_gmt":"2024-02-12T13:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-start-up-visa-what-is-a-commitment-certificate-and-letter-of-support-and-how-do-i-get-one"},"modified":"2024-02-12T11:28:20","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T16:28:20","slug":"canada-start-up-visa-what-is-a-commitment-certificate-and-letter-of-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-start-up-visa-what-is-a-commitment-certificate-and-letter-of-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Start-Up Visa: What is a\u00a0Commitment\u00a0Certificate\u00a0and\u00a0Letter\u00a0of\u00a0Support?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Immigrant entrepreneurs hoping to gain permanent residency in Canada through the <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/start-up-visa-program\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Start-Up Visa<\/span><\/a> (SUV) program need to\u00a0get\u00a0both\u00a0commitment\u00a0certificates and letters of\u00a0support\u00a0from business groups approved to invest or\u00a0support\u00a0their\u00a0start-ups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Certificates of\u00a0commitment\u00a0and letters of\u00a0support\u00a0are similar since both are provided by designated organizations which invest or\u00a0support\u00a0start-ups but these are different documents and it\u2019s important to understand exactly what each\u00a0one\u00a0of them is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A certificate of commitment is what is sent to an applicant by a designated private sector business to confirm their agreement under the SUV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A letter of support is the document given to the applicant by a designated angel investor group or venture capital fund as proof they will support the immigrant entrepreneur\u2019s business idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When a designated organization, which must be an approved \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canadas-start-up-visa-what-is-an-angel-investor-group\/\"><span class=\"s1\">angel investor<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canadas-start-up-visa-what-is-a-business-incubator\/\"><span class=\"s1\">business\u00a0incubator<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canadas-start-up-visa-what-is-a-venture-capital-fund\/\"><span class=\"s1\">venture capital funs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0, decides to\u00a0support\u00a0a particular applicant\u2019s business venture under the\u00a0SUV, it must send a\u00a0certificate\u00a0of\u00a0commitment\u00a0directly to Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship\u00a0Canada\u00a0(IRCC).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Read More<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-battling-large-backlog-of-permanent-resident-card-applications\/\">Canada Battling Large Backlog Of Permanent Resident Card Applications<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-to-cut-red-tape-limiting-ability-of-immigrants-to-travel-within-country\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Canada To Cut Red Tape Limiting Ability Of Immigrants To Travel Within Country<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/ontario-retains-the-most-of-its-immigrants-of-any-canadian-province-or-territory\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Ontario Retains The Most Of Its Immigrants Of Any Canadian Province Or Territory<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u00a0certificate\u00a0of\u00a0commitment\u00a0must contain information about:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">the designated entity itself;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">the applicant;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">the entrepreneurial team applying under the\u00a0Start-Up\u00a0Visa\u00a0program;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">the type of business and what it will\u00a0do;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">its business structure;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">background information, and;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">work permits for the essential applicant or applicants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Commitment\u00a0certificates are valid for six months. During that time, the applicant has to apply for permanent residence and, when applicable, a work permit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The\u00a0letter\u00a0or letters of\u00a0support\u00a0provided by the designated organization, though, are provided to the applicant or applicants themselves. There can be\u00a0up\u00a0to five applicants for each application under the\u00a0SUV and a\u00a0letter\u00a0of\u00a0support\u00a0must be provided to each\u00a0one\u00a0of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These letters of\u00a0support\u00a0are to contain information about the designated organization, the\u00a0commitment\u00a0certificate, the applicant and the team heading\u00a0up\u00a0the proposed business venture. That\u00a0letter\u00a0of\u00a0support\u00a0is the entrepreneur\u2019s proof that the designated organization will\u00a0support\u00a0his or her business idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These letters of\u00a0support\u00a0are then included by the fledgling entrepreneur in his or her application for permanent residence under the\u00a0SUV.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Canada Does Not Provide Financial Support To SUV Applicants<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The basic candidate eligibility requirements for the SUV program are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">a qualifying business;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">a commitment certificate and letter of support from a designated entity;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">sufficient unencumbered, available and transferable settlement funds, and;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">proficiency in English or French at the minimum Canadian Language Benchmark level 5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ottawa does not give financial support to new SUV immigrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When candidates apply, they need to give a proof they have the money to support themselves and their dependents in Canada. This money cannot be borrowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The amount needed depends on the size of the candidate\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With a viable start-up business project, an immigrant entrepreneur can expect it to take about four to six months to secure a commitment certificate or letter of support from a designated entity. Once that letter of support is received, the application for permanent residence can be submitted. It will then take approximately 18-months to finalize the application through to the issuance of a permanent residence visa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For the candidate to qualify for permanent residence:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">the intended business must be incorporated and carrying on business in Canada;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">the candidate must own at least 10 per cent of the voting rights in the corporation, and;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">no other person can hold 50 per cent or more of the voting rights in the corporation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">As many as five candidates can have their permanent residence application supported by the same business investment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Immigrant entrepreneurs hoping to gain permanent residency in Canada through the Start-Up Visa (SUV) program need to\u00a0get\u00a0both\u00a0commitment\u00a0certificates and letters of\u00a0support\u00a0from business groups approved to invest or\u00a0support\u00a0their\u00a0start-ups.
