Further to our existing pathways, IRCC has also announced two new programs to help Ukrainians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In what is sure to be an understatement, the IRCC communications advisor noted that immigration officials are expecting the number of arrivals from Ukraine will increase as these two programs are launched.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The number of Ukrainians fleeing their homes is now in the millions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cToday we have passed another terrible milestone: three million refugees have fled from Ukraine,\u201d tweeted Filippo Grandhi, the United Nations\u2019 high commissioner for refugees, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe war has to stop. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Watch Video<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kosXiqfsKCg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">But even as both Russia and Ukraine expressed optimism over the progress of diplomatic talks this week, a Russian airstrike destroyed a theatre being used as a shelter by hundreds of Ukrainians. Russian forces also reportedly rained fire on other Ukrainian cities Wednesday.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Canada has vowed to take in an unlimited number of Ukrainian refugees under a new Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel and is also fast-tracking their applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe work on setting up the temporary program is ongoing, and it will be ready for applications this week,\u201d wrote Liang.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Biometrics Are Collected From Applicants To Screen For Security And Medical Issues<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite the anticipated surge in applications, Canadian immigration officials say Canada is taking the needed steps to ensure proper security and medical screening is being done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAll immigrants, refugees and visitors, including temporary foreign workers and students, are carefully screened before coming into Canada,\u201d wrote Liang.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis screening ensures that these persons do not pose a threat to the health, safety or security of Canadians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ukrainians can find the Visa Application Centres nearest to them by going online to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/corporate\/contact-ircc\/offices\/find-visa-application-centre.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">find a visa application centre<\/span><\/a>\u00a0page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While biometrics instruction letters usually expire after 30 days, Canada has extended the amount of time offered to Ukrainian applicants so they have a reasonable chance of being able to visit a biometric collection point to enroll their biometrics.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cClients do not need to contact IRCC to receive a new letter or request an extension to the biometric requirement,\u201d noted Liang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the Russia-Ukraine war, Ottawa is throwing its support behind the Ukrainian people, a move that has resulted in Russia banning Canada\u2019s prime minister and 311 other Canadian politicians from being able to enter the country.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Immigration Minister Sean Fraser sees that ban as a badge of honour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI was banned from Russia today,\u201d tweeted Fraser on Tuesday. \u201cI\u2019ve seen my name on a few lists since I was first elected, and am more than happy to be included on this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Canada Pledges $117M For Special Ukraine Immigration Measures<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a joint news conference in Warsaw with Polish President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week Ottawa will spend $117 million for special immigration measures to hasten the arrival of Ukrainians to Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cEven, as we see here today in Poland, people opening up their homes, I want you to know that Canada is here to help,\u201d said Trudeau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Canada has also promised to triple the amount it will spend to match individual Canadians\u2019 donations to the Canadian Red Cross\u2019 Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That means Canada is now pledging up to $30 million, up from $10 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Among the new immigration measures announced since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">a dedicated service channel for Ukraine enquiries that will be available for clients both in Canada and abroad at 613-321-4243, with collect calls accepted. In addition, clients can now add the keyword \u201cUkraine2022\u201d to the IRCC Webform with their enquiry and their e-mail will be prioritized;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">urgent processing of travel documents, including issuing single-journey travel documents for immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who do not have valid passports;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">an updated web page to provide current information on measures. This page will include content in Ukrainian for ease of reference;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">permission for Ukrainians currently in Canada to extend their stay or stay longer in Canada by prioritizing the renewal of work and study permits, and extending a policy that allows individuals to apply for a work permit from within Canada. This policy would allow temporary residents who receive a job offer to remain in Canada and start working while they wait for their work permit application to be processed, and;<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">the issuance of open work permits to Ukrainian visitors, workers and students who are currently in Canada and cannot go home, so they can stay longer if they wish.
