International students looking for a place to study abroad are giving Canada top marks for its handling of the COVID-19 global pandemic, says an Australian expert in international education trends.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn May, 2020 Navitas surveyed its global agent network to explore how COVID-19 was changing the fortunes of international study destinations,\u201d says Jon Chew, head of strategic insights and analytics at Navitas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cFindings from that initial survey showed that Canada\u2019s reputation as a study destination had been enhanced by its government\u2019s handling of the pandemic. At that time, New Zealand, Australia and Canada were leading the pack.\u201d<\/p>\n Since then, Navitas has repeated its survey. In September this year, it discovered that Canada\u2019s handling of the pandemic had further enhanced its reputation as favourable place to come and study.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the survey, 5.1 per cent more international education experts agreed there had been a growing interest by international students<\/span><\/a> in the previous two months in Canada as a destination to study. That boost in Canada\u2019s reputation as a good place to study stands in marked contrast to the 1.2 percentage point decline in the United States\u2019 reputation.<\/p>\n Read More<\/b><\/p>\n Canada\u2019s Coronavirus Travel Exemption For International Students Begins Today, October 20<\/a><\/span> The big winner in the survey was the United Kingdom. The country saw an increase of 29 percentage points from May through to September.\u00a0 <\/span>New Zealand was the biggest loser, with its standing in the survey slipping 12.5 percentage points. Australia slumped 3.7 percentage points.<\/p>\n The latest survey captured the views of almost 300 educational experts in 54 countries and explored whether perceptions of a country\u2019s handling of the pandemic impacts its reputation as an educational destination.<\/p>\n Ottawa\u2019s handling of the pandemic also buoyed confidence among international students that they would be able to come to Canada in the first half of the new year.<\/p>\n \u201cAlmost 30 per cent of agents expect that it is \u2018almost certain\u2019 that students will be able to travel to Canada in the first half of 2021,\u201d says Chew. \u201cThis is some distance behind the UK but ahead of Australia, New Zealand and USA.\u201d<\/p>\n In late October, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada showed that confidence in Canada was merited. Canada re-opened its borders to international students attending approved colleges and universities under new exemptions to coronavirus travel restrictions.<\/p>\n To be allowed into Canada, international students approved for a study permit must be attending a Designated Learning Institution with a COVID-19 readiness plan approved by their provincial or territorial government.<\/p>\n The new exemption applies to all international students, regardless of where they are travelling from. It does not affect those already in Canada.<\/p>\n International students are increasingly prevalent on Canadian campuses.<\/p>\n During the decade that closed at the end of the 2018-19 academic year, the growth in the number of international students attending Canadian universities and colleges far outstripped the growth in the number of Canadian students.<\/p>\n \u201cEnrolments for Canadian students in formal programs grew by 10.9 per cent, from 1,486,602 to 1,648,923,\u201d Statistics Canada recently revealed. \u201cOver the same period, the number of international students more than tripled, from 101,304 \u2026 to 318,153.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s led to a growth in the proportion of international students attending Canadian colleges and universities, from 6.4 per cent during the 2008-09 school year to 16.2 per cent a decade later.
