{"id":82338,"date":"2020-12-21T11:08:44","date_gmt":"2020-12-21T16:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/canada-suspends-u-k-flights-over-fears-of-new-strain-of-covid-19"},"modified":"2021-05-16T22:48:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T02:48:44","slug":"canada-suspends-u-k-flights-over-fears-of-new-strain-of-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-suspends-u-k-flights-over-fears-of-new-strain-of-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Suspends U.K. Flights Over Fears Of New Strain Of COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada has suspended flights from the United Kingdom for 72 hours to try and halt the spread of a new strain of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement, effective midnight Sunday Dec. 20, sees Canada join multiple countries from around the world in limiting travel from the UK while experts study the new variant.<\/p>\n<p>The UK and World Health Organization (WHO) say the new variant appears to spread much more quickly than other strains of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>UK officials have described the strain as \u2018out of control\u2019 in their country.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Read More<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canadas-pathway-to-permanent-residence-for-asylum-seekers-in-care-homes-open-on-december-14\">Canada\u2019s Pathway to Permanent Residence for Asylum Seekers in Care Homes Open On December 14<\/a><\/span><span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-passes-100000-invitations-for-2020-in-new-express-entry-draw\">Canada Passes 100,000 Invitations For 2020 In New Express Entry Draw<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-launches-new-portal-for-confirming-permanent-residence\">Canada Launches New Portal For Confirming Permanent Residence<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Passengers who arrived from the UK overnight were also subject to more intense screening and scrutiny of quarantine plans, a statement from the Public Health Agency of Canada said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPassengers who arrived recently from the United Kingdom will also receive additional direction from the Government of Canada,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Health Patty Hajdu said: \u201cOur government will continue to do what\u2019s necessary to protect the health of Canadians.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese additional measures will allow public health officials time to gather further evidence and help reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, no cases of the new strain have been reported in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say existing COVID-19 vaccines appear to be as effective against the new variant. Symptom severity and antibody response also appear to be the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is essential to the health and safety of all Canadians that we continue to quickly adapt our border measures to respond to the evolving COVID-19 situation,\u201d said Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Canada Border Services Agency officers remain vigilant and are ready to implement these enhanced border measures to protect Canadians\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mcetoc_1eq302vk80\">Travel Restrictions<\/h3>\n<p>The closure of the Canada-U.S. border and restrictions on international travel have been in place since March and currently expire on January 21.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The U.S. continues to be ravaged by COVID-19, while Canada is battling a second wave of the pandemic across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s travel restrictions bar entry to all except citizens and permanent residents, with some exemptions.<\/p>\n<p>Canada currently has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/coronavirus-tfws-certain-international-students-and-approved-prs-can-now-travel-to-canada\"><span>exemptions<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in place for the following people, provided they are travelling for a non-discretionary reason.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><\/span>Seasonal agricultural workers, fish\/seafood workers, caregivers and all other temporary foreign workers.<\/li>\n<li><span><\/span><span>International students attending\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/designated-learning-institutions-with-approved-covid-19-readiness-plans-for-international-students\">a Designated Learning Institution with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><\/span>Permanent resident applicants who had been approved for permanent residence before the travel restrictions were announced on March 18, 2020, but who had not yet travelled to Canada.<\/li>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/explained-canadas-new-exemption-for-family-members-of-citizens-and-permanent-residents\">Immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents are also exempt<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0if entering to be with an immediate family member for at least 15 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><\/span>Extended family members of citizens and permanent residents, plus foreign nationals travelling on compassionate grounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada has suspended flights from the United Kingdom for 72 hours to try and halt the spread of a new strain of COVID-19.
