Canada passed 100,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in a calendar year for the first time by issuing 5,000 <\/span>Invitations to Apply<\/a><\/span> (ITAs) for the third consecutive <\/span>Express Entry<\/a><\/span> draw.<\/span><\/p>\n

The December 9 draw took the total ITAs for 2020 to 102,350, while the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 469 equalled the lowest of 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a year marred by the coronavirus crisis, such a high number of ITAs is even more remarkable.<\/span><\/p>\n

It shows Canada\u2019s commitment to skilled worker immigration, put forth in the federal government\u2019s plan to power the economic recovery from COVID-19 by <\/span>welcoming more than 400,000 newcomers per year from 2021.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Canada has significantly eclipsed the previous record for ITAs in a calendar year \u2013 the 89,800 issued in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest draw was also the fourth since Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) moved to <\/span>increase the points available for French speaking and bilingual candidates<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It saw the tie-breaking rule implemented on June 4, 2020 at 8.26pm EST. If more than one candidate had the minimum CRS score, only those who submitted their Express Entry profiles before this date and time received invitations.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was the 36th<\/sup> round of invitations under\u00a0<\/span>Express Entry<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in 2020 and\u00a0<\/span>169th<\/sup> overall<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Express Entry?<\/h3>\n

Express Entry is an immigration system implemented by Canadian immigration authorities (IRCC) on January 1, 2015 which manages skilled worker applications under Federal Economic programs. This includes the\u00a0<\/span>Federal Skilled Worker Program<\/a><\/span>, the\u00a0<\/span>Federal Skilled Trades Program\u00a0<\/a><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Canada Experience Class<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and parts of the\u00a0<\/span>Provincial Nomination Programs<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stakeholders expect to see continued high numbers of invitations issued as Canada builds towards its <\/span>target of more than 400,000 new permanent residents in 2021<\/a><\/span>, with a majority of draws featuring CRS scores around\u00a0470. <\/span><\/p>\n

With the coronavirus crisis striking in March, Canada switch to program-specific draws aimed at Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Program candidates. This had the affect of significantly increasing the number of individual draws beyond previous years.<\/span><\/p>\n
