{"id":81398,"date":"2020-11-13T18:15:30","date_gmt":"2020-11-13T23:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/advantage-of-privately-sponsored-refugees-erodes-over-time-study"},"modified":"2021-05-16T22:52:37","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T02:52:37","slug":"advantage-of-privately-sponsored-refugees-erodes-over-time-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/advantage-of-privately-sponsored-refugees-erodes-over-time-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Advantage of Privately-Sponsored Refugees Erodes Over Time: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Privately-sponsored <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/refugee-protection\/\">refugees<\/a> have faster labour market success in Canada than refugee claimants, but the gap is eroded over time, a new study shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the privately-sponsored group are significantly more likely to find a job in the first year after their arrival, after four years the difference is negligible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The findings were reported in a new Statistics Canada study, entitled \u2018The Long-term Labour Market Integration of Refugee Claimants Who Became Permanent Residents in Canada\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe superior labour market position of PSRs shortly after landing compared with the other groups studied is not surprising, as they initially had a sponsor who volunteered to help them financially or otherwise for up to one year,\u201d the study says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHowever, over time, the labour market situation of RC-PRs improved at a much faster rate, eventually surpassing that of PSRs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span>Read More<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-now-the-world-leader-on-resettling-refugees\">Canada Now The World Leader On Resettling Refugees<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/covid-19-pathway-to-permanent-residence-for-asylum-seekers-in-canadas-care-homes\">COVID-19: Pathway to Permanent Residence for Asylum Seekers in Canada\u2019s Care Homes<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/coronavirus-canada-to-begin-turning-away-irregular-border-crossers-from-u-s\">Coronavirus: Canada To Begin Turning Away Irregular Border Crossers From U.S.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span>The study compared the labour market outcomes of refugee claimants who became permanent residents, privately-sponsored refugees and government-assisted refugees, focusing on the first two groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Using landing record and personal tax data, the study followed the candidates for up to 13 years after landing in 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCanada offers refugee protection to individuals who have a well-founded fear of persecution or face other personal dangers in their home country,\u201d the study said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAlthough refugee claimants seek asylum in Canada for humanitarian reasons, their labour market outcomes play a crucial role in successful integration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span>After one year of landing<\/span><\/strong><span>, refugee claimants were far more likely to collect social assistance (66.5%) than privately-sponsored refugees (18.4%). Refugee claimants were also significantly less likely to report employment income (62%) than their privately-sponsored counterparts (81.6%).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/After-one-year-of-landing.png\" alt=\"After one year of landing\" width=\"540\" height=\"278\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-81380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/After-one-year-of-landing.png 974w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/After-one-year-of-landing-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/After-one-year-of-landing-768x396.png 768w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/After-one-year-of-landing-280x144.png 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span>However, <strong>after four years of landing<\/strong>, the figures changed, with an almost identical proportion of refugee claimants (21.1%) collecting assistance as privately-sponsored (21.0%).
