{"id":79338,"date":"2020-08-24T19:28:22","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T23:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/canada-warned-reduced-immigration-could-impact-economic-growth"},"modified":"2020-08-24T19:28:22","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T23:28:22","slug":"canada-warned-reduced-immigration-could-impact-economic-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-warned-reduced-immigration-could-impact-economic-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Warned Reduced Immigration Could Impact Economic Growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">The drop in <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/immigrationtocanadaoverview\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Canada immigration<\/span><\/a> caused by the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to derail an important driver of economic growth, a new RBC Economics report has warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Permanent resident arrivals dropped sharply, particularly in April, side-lining the federal government\u2019s strategy of immigration-fuelled economic growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">International travel restrictions and the closure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-u-s-border-closure-extended-until-september-21\"><span class=\"s1\">Canada-U.S. border<\/span><\/a> were necessary to stop the spread of the deadly virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Now RBC Economics is predicting Canada will welcome a maximum of 70 percent of the targeted 341,000 immigrants in 2020.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Read More<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-steps-up-efforts-to-lure-u-s-technology-talent-hit-by-trump-visa-crackdown\">Canada Steps Up Efforts to Lure U.S. Technology Talent Hit By Trump Visa Crackdown<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/where-have-canadas-new-immigrants-come-from-so-far-in-2020\"><span class=\"s1\">Where Have Canada\u2019s New Immigrants Come From So Far In 2020?<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-u-s-border-closure-extended-until-september-21\"><span class=\"s1\">Canada-U.S. Border Closure Extended Until September 21<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">Immigration is the major driver of Canada\u2019s labour market and population growth, with many employers heavily reliant on newcomers to fill vacancies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe reduced flow threatens to, at least temporarily, derail what\u2019s been a major source of economic growth for Canada in recent years,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It added: \u201cGiven the demands COVID-19 has placed on Canada\u2019s health-care sector, especially in long-term care facilities, the need for workers has never been greater and any slowdown is likely to add to existing strains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The statistics are revealing: Canada\u2019s second-quarter intake of 34,000 new permanent residents is down by two-thirds on the same period of 2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-work-visa\"><span class=\"s1\">Work permits<\/span><\/a> entering into effect in the second quarter were down by half, while <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-student-visa\"><span class=\"s1\">study permit<\/span><\/a> processing plummeted 90 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The RBC report outlines that the newly approved permanent residents mainly came from candidates already in Canada temporarily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nearly 60 percent of the second quarter\u2019s permanent resident arrivals were already in Canada, a figure that normally hovers around 20 percent.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/New-Permanent-Resident-Admissions-to-Canada-by-Month-1.jpg\" alt=\"New Permanent Resident Admissions to Canada by Month\" width=\"512\" height=\"307\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-79167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/New-Permanent-Resident-Admissions-to-Canada-by-Month-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/New-Permanent-Resident-Admissions-to-Canada-by-Month-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/New-Permanent-Resident-Admissions-to-Canada-by-Month-1-280x168.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">With Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) switching to program-specific Express Entry draws during the pandemic, this trend is likely to continue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Draws have focused on Provincial Nominee Program and Canadian Experience Class candidates since March. Both groups are more likely to already be in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nearly 40,000 Invitations to Apply have been issued in 20 draws targeting PNP and CEC candidates in the last five months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Canada\u2019s monthly immigration levels continued to recover in June, with more than 19,000 new permanent resident arrivals welcomed, according to the latest federal government figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The total is a 75 percent increase on the nearly 11,000 newcomers welcomed in May, but still significantly down on the more than 34,000 admissions in June 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Between January and June, Canada welcomed 103,420 new immigrants, down from 160,230 in the same period of 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The drop in Canada immigration caused by the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to derail an important driver of economic growth, a new RBC Economics report has warned.
