{"id":76140,"date":"2020-03-28T20:42:52","date_gmt":"2020-03-29T00:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/canada-delays-opening-of-parents-and-grandparents-program-blaming-coronavirus"},"modified":"2020-03-28T20:44:22","modified_gmt":"2020-03-29T00:44:22","slug":"canada-delays-opening-of-parents-and-grandparents-program-blaming-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-delays-opening-of-parents-and-grandparents-program-blaming-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Delays Opening Of Parents and Grandparents Program, Blaming Coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>2020-03-28 &#8211; Canada has delayed the opening of the 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/parent-and-grandparent-sponsorship-re-opens\">Parents and Grandparents Program<\/a> as it focuses on the response to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a statement issued on Friday, March 27, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said it had expected to launch the call for expressions of interest \u2018in the coming weeks\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGiven the present circumstances, however, we are prioritizing our efforts to contribute to the whole-of-government response to the pandemic,\u201d the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>IRCC says the delayed launch should not impact when parents and grandparents arrive in Canada. It said the processing of applications is ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Government of Canada remains strongly committed to family reunification, and IRCC is committed to opening the program as soon as possible,\u201d IRCC said.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span><b>Read More<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-delays-parents-and-grandparents-program-with-new-intake-process-under-development\">Canada Delays Parents and Grandparents Program With New Intake Process Under Development<\/a><\/span><span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/ottawa-settles-lawsuits-by-awarding-70-parents-and-grandparents-program-places-report\">Ottawa Settles Lawsuits By Awarding 70 Parents and Grandparents Program Places: Report<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/ircc-begins-issuing-invites-for-parents-and-grandparents-program\">IRCC Begins Issuing Invites For Parents and Grandparents Program<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/discrimination-claims-over-irccs-handling-of-parents-and-grandparents-program\">Discrimination Claims Over IRCC\u2019s Handling of Parents and Grandparents Program<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span>The opening of the controversial program had already been delayed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In December 2019, IRCC issued a statement saying the PGP would not open in January to allow more time for a new intake process to be developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The PGP application process has been highly controversial in recent years, given the huge number of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who wish to bring their relatives here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2019, the IRCC employed an online first-come, the first-served process for submitting \u2018Interest to Sponsor\u2019 forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The form was available for only minutes when it went live on January 28, 2019, with many saying they were never able to see it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>IRCC says 100,000 people tried to access the form at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a result, Canada\u2019s federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/ottawa-settles-lawsuits-by-awarding-70-parents-and-grandparents-program-places-report\">awarded 70 places under the program to settle two lawsuits that said the online application system was unfair<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The settlement, made in secret, saw members of the lawsuits allowed to sponsor their parents and\/or grandparents to immigrate to Canada,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/immigration-parent-sponsorship-legal-settlement-1.5154407\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a CBC News report<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Officials moved to change the system for 2019 in response to complaints about the lottery method used for the previous two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the previous method, interest to sponsor forms was submitted during a month-long window in January, with candidates drawn at random to complete full applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mcetoc_1e4hr8uhm0\">Parents and Grandparents Program: 2019 Process<\/h3>\n<p><span><b><i>Please note:<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0A new process is expected for 2020 applications<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>Step 1: Potential sponsors indicate their interest<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Eligible potential sponsors complete an \u2018Interest to Sponsor\u2019 form to let IRCC know they wish to sponsor their parents and grandparents. The form requires potential sponsors to upload a copy of a status in Canada document.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The form will remain available until a set number has been received.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>Step 2: Invitations to sponsor are sent<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Once the interest to sponsor period ends, IRCC will review the submissions and remove duplicates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>IRCC officials will then invite interested potential sponsors to submit a complete application to sponsor their parents and grandparents, in order interest to sponsor forms were received. This process will continue until the cap of 20,000 completed applications is reached.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>Step 3: Applications are submitted<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Those who are invited to apply have 60 calendar days for IRCC to receive their complete application.
