{"id":72178,"date":"2019-09-11T20:16:29","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T20:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/canada-says-no-special-immigration-measures-in-place-for-victims-of-hurricane-dorian"},"modified":"2019-09-11T20:17:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T20:17:39","slug":"canada-says-no-special-immigration-measures-in-place-for-victims-of-hurricane-dorian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-says-no-special-immigration-measures-in-place-for-victims-of-hurricane-dorian\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Says No Special Immigration Measures In Place For Victims Of Hurricane Dorian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2019-09-11 &#8211; Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/immigrationtocanadaoverview\/\">immigration<\/a> department has issued a clarification statement concerning how the federal government is responding in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.<\/p>\n<p>Dorian ripped through the Bahamas in early September, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake impacting the lives of thousands of people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says no special immigration measures have been put in place to help those affected.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the IRCC statement said: \u201cAsylum claims cannot be made at a Canadian embassy, high commission, consulate, consulate general, or honorary consulate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement also said: \u201cCanadians remain gravely concerned by Hurricane Dorian and we express our condolences to all those affected by the devastation it caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Read More<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-effectively-ends-designated-country-of-origin-refugee-policy\">Canada Effectively Ends Designated Country of Origin Refugee Policy<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-now-the-world-leader-on-resettling-refugees\">Canada Now The World Leader On Resettling Refugees<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-adopts-un-global-compact-on-migration-of-refugees\">Canada Adopts UN Global Compact on Migration of Refugees<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The absence of specific immigration measures does not mean those affected by Dorian cannot claim refugee status in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has specific requirements for claiming refugee status, as defined by the Immigration Refugee Protection Act.<\/p>\n<p>Refugees are accepted in one of two groups:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Convention refugee.<\/li>\n<li>Person in need of protection.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A <b>convention refugee<\/b> is a person who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>race,<\/li>\n<li>religion,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>nationality,<\/li>\n<li>membership of a particular social group, or<\/li>\n<li>political opinion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>is outside the country of his nationality and is unable to or, owing to such fear, unwilling to avail of the protection of that country.<\/p>\n<p>A <b>person in need of protection<\/b> is a person in Canada whose removal to their country of nationality or former habitual residence would subject them to the possibility of:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Torture,<\/li>\n<li>risk of life, or<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Canada plans to welcome 46,450 refugees and protected persons in 2019, according to its immigration levels plan.<\/p>\n<p>The number is set to rise to 49,700 in 2020, and to 51,700 in 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2019-09-11 &#8211; Canada\u2019s immigration department has issued a clarification statement concerning how the federal government is responding in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
