Jun 19, 2019 – Canada job vacancies remained above the half a million mark in the first quarter of 2019, with year-on-year increases now seen in each of the last 10 quarters.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were 506,000 unfilled positions in the first quarter of 2019, up 44,000 on the same period of 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Canada-wide job vacancies were down slightly on the previous quarter, there have now been more than half a million unfilled jobs for each of the last four quarters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vacancy increases were seen in 10 out of 14 provinces and territories, with Quebec well out in front after seeing vacancies increase by 21,365 in the first quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly half of Quebec\u2019s job vacancy growth is attributed to three sectors: health care and social assistance, manufacturing, and accommodation and food services.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other provinces to see major increases were Ontario and British Columbia, at 12,430 and 9,320 respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Ontario, gains were concentrated in the health care and social assistance, retail trade, professional, scientific and technical services, and accommodation and food services sectors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

British Columbia, meanwhile, saw major vacancy growth in the transportation and warehousing and professional, scientific and technical services sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the other provinces and territories, increases were below the 1,000-vacancy point.<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of industry, the health care and social assistance sector added the most vacancies, at 9,885. The rise was driven by nursing and residential care facilities, and concentrated in Quebec and Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n

Relatively large growth was also observed in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.<\/span><\/p>\n

A further 9,115 vacancies were added in the professional, scientific and technical services sector. Vacancies were up in most provinces, led by Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec. <\/span><\/p>\n

Manufacturing also saw a major rise, adding 6,280 vacancies in the first quarter. Job vacancy gains in Quebec contributed to most of the sector’s growth over this period.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the retail trade sector, a further 4,050 vacancies were added, with increases in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta.<\/span><\/p>\n

Further vacancy rises were seen in accommodation and food services (3,180), educational services (2,495), construction (2,835) and administrative and support services (1,255).<\/span><\/p>\n
