{"id":68537,"date":"2019-04-26T22:17:39","date_gmt":"2019-04-26T22:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/immigrant-entrepreneurs-create-more-jobs-than-canadian-born-business-owners-study"},"modified":"2019-04-26T22:19:51","modified_gmt":"2019-04-26T22:19:51","slug":"immigrant-entrepreneurs-create-more-jobs-than-canadian-born-business-owners-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/immigrant-entrepreneurs-create-more-jobs-than-canadian-born-business-owners-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Immigrant Entrepreneurs Create More Jobs Than Canadian-Born Business Owners: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">April 26, 2019 &#8211; Businesses in Canada owned by immigrant entrepreneurs create more jobs than those owned by native Canadians, according to a new study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Statistics Canada study, entitled \u2018Immigrant Entrepreneurs as Job Creators\u2019 provides further evidence of the positive economic role played by a country\u2019s immigrant population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The data shows that \u2018firms owned by immigrants accounted for a disproportionate share of net job creation\u2019 in the period studied, between 2003 and 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Read More<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/how-to-buy-a-business-and-move-to-canada\">How To Buy A Business And Move To Canada<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/how-canadas-immigrant-entrepreneurs-are-bucking-a-global-trend\"><span class=\"s4\">How Canada\u2019s Immigrant Entrepreneurs Are Bucking A Global Trend<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canadas-provincial-business-immigration-programs-turning-conditional-two-step-process\"><span class=\"s4\">Canada\u2019s Provincial Business Immigration Programs Turning to a Conditional Two-Step Process (Audio)<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/immigrants-make-good-entrepreneurs-and-thats-good-news-for-canada\"><span class=\"s4\">Immigrants Make Good Entrepreneurs and That\u2019s Good News for Canada<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In that time, private incorporated businesses owned by immigrants represented 17 per cent of the firms in Canada, but created 25 per cent of the jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Companies owned by immigrants were also more likely to be considered \u2018high growth\u2019 than those with Canadian-born owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To be considered \u2018high-growth\u2019, forms must have greater than 20 per cent annual employment growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe information in this study provides a useful first step in understanding the role of immigrant entrepreneurs in the Canadian economy,\u201d the Statistics Canada report says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A central reason as to why immigrant firms create more jobs is down to the age of the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Companies owned by immigrants tend to be younger than those owned by native Canadians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of the firms studied, more than 75 per cent of those owned by immigrants were less than a decade old, compared with 53 per cent of those with Canadian-born owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Statistics Canada said: \u201cThe study shows that the relatively larger contribution of immigrant-owned firms to net job creation and the greater tendency to be a high-growth firm, were primarily due to the age of the firm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It continued: \u201cEarlier research has shown that younger firms grow faster and create jobs at a higher rate than older firms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An earlier Statistics Canada report, released in September 2018, found Canada\u2019s immigrant entrepreneurs operate their businesses for at least as long as their Canadian-born counterparts, bucking global trends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Research found that 80 per cent of immigrant owners of private companies were still owners two years after starting their business. Furthermore, 58 per cent still had their businesses seven years on. The percentages are similar for Canadian-born business owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In comparison, studies from Sweden, Norway, Germany and the U.S. have found immigrant-owned businesses have a shorter survival time that those owned by native-born entrepreneurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ownership rate figures show immigrants take their time to adjust in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the first few years after arrival, ownership rates are below those of the Canadian-born, but after time the figures are reversed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">About 5.8 per cent of immigrants who had been in Canada for 10 to 30 years owned a private incorporated company with employees in 2010.
