While Trump goes about his immigration crackdown, Canada has announced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-welcome-continued-record-immigration-numbers\/\">sustained record immigration<\/a>\u00a0numbers and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/express-entry-breaking-news-canada-eases-pathway-permanent-residence-foreign-workers-international-students\/\">tweaked its immigration system<\/a>\u00a0to help satisfy economic needs.<\/p>\n<p>One of those tweaks will make it easier for international students to begin their working lives in Canada once they graduate.<\/p>\n<p>The carrot of being given a pathway to permanent residence after graduation gives Canada an overwhelmingly strong case for drawing away some of the more than a million international students attending U.S. schools in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>International students pay up to two or three times the tuition fees of Canadian students, making them key contributors to the budgets of the top universities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>One estimate suggested the U.S. international student population was worth $32 billion a year to its economy.<\/p>\n<h3>International Graduates Under Express Entry<\/h3>\n<p>Changes made to Canada\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/express-entry-immigration-2016\/\">Express Entry System<\/a>\u00a0mean international students completing recognized degrees and diplomas in Canada are now specifically awarded points for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Students completing a three-year post secondary, master\u2019s, professional degree or doctorate will get 30 extra points, while those who complete a post secondary diploma of at least one year duration score 15 points. No points are awarded for a high school certificate obtained in Canada.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Points Awarded for Canadian Education Under Express Entry<\/h3>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Education Level<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Number of Points<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>High school<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>One or two-year post secondary<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>15<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Three-year post secondary, master\u2019s,\u00a0professional degree or doctorate<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>30<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In order to score Canadian education points, the candidate must have:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Studied in Canada at a Canadian educational institution.<\/li>\n<li>Been enrolled in full-time study or training for at least eight months.<\/li>\n<li>Been physically present in Canada for at least eight months.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Provinces Switch Focus to International Students<\/h3>\n<p>Canada\u2019s provinces are already focusing on attracting international students to their universities, and on welcoming international graduates through their immigration programs.<\/p>\n<p>Recent rounds of invitations issued under British Columbia\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/british-columbia-immigration\/\">Provincial Nominee Program<\/a>\u00a0have been heavily weighted towards international graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Nova Scotia has introduced a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/nova-scotia-targets-international-students-boost-immigration\/\">pilot program<\/a>\u00a0designed to attract international graduates to remain in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates in fields such as health care, entrepreneurship, computer engineering and ocean sciences will see their salaries subsidized under the program, initially open to 50 graduates.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Prince Edward Island is also increasing its international student recruitment efforts following significant success in growing its cohort.<\/p>\n<p>With numbers of Canadian-born undergraduates dropping off in recent years, the school now relies on students from abroad to drive growth in enrollment numbers.<\/p>\n<p>The latest figures from 2015 show 17 per cent of the overall student population is from overseas \u2013 or 748 out of total enrollment of 4,317.<\/p>\n<p><b>Interested employers:\u00a0<\/b>Kindly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/en\/employment-portal\/canada-employers.html\">contact us<\/a>\u00a0here to receive further information.<\/p>\n<p><b>Interested candidates:<\/b>\u00a0Find out whether you qualify to Canada by completing our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/en\/free-immigration-evaluation.html\">free on-line evaluation<\/a>.
