{"id":131877,"date":"2023-12-20T14:24:17","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T19:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/immigration-drives-fastest-canada-population-growth-since-1957\/"},"modified":"2023-12-20T14:24:17","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T19:24:17","slug":"immigration-drives-fastest-canada-population-growth-since-1957","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/immigration-drives-fastest-canada-population-growth-since-1957\/","title":{"rendered":"Immigration Drives Fastest Canada Population Growth Since 1957"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/visa-de-travail-canadien-travailler-au-canada\/\">Temporary foreign workers<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/etudier-au-canada-etre-admis-une-universite-ou-un-college-canadien\/\"><span class=\"s1\">international students<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and new permanent residents \u2013 drove the fastest quarterly population growth in Canada since 1957 in the three months that ended at the start of October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCanada&rsquo;s population was estimated at 40,528,396 on Oct. 1, 2023, an increase of 430,635 people up 1.1 per cent from July 1,\u201d reports Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis was the highest population growth rate in any quarter since the second quarter of 1957, which saw growth of 1.2 per cent, when Canada&rsquo;s population grew by 198,000 people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As the Canadian population ages, the number of deaths to births increases and so natural population growth declines. Almost all, 96 per cent of Canada\u2019s current population growth is due to immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe rest of this gain, four per cent, was the result of natural increase, or the difference between the number of births and deaths,\u201d notes Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Read More<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/manitoba-pnp-draw-province-issues-283-canada-immigration-invitations\/\">Manitoba PNP Draw: Province Issues 283 Canada Immigration Invitations<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/ontario-conducts-mammoth-express-entry-draw-targeting-tech-occupations\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Ontario Conducts Mammoth Express Entry Draw Targeting Tech Occupations<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/how-to-immigrate-to-canada-as-a-therapist-in-counselling\/\"><span class=\"s1\">How To Immigrate To Canada As A Therapist In Counselling<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe contribution of natural increase to population growth is expected to remain low in the coming years because of population aging, lower fertility levels, and the high number of immigrants and non-permanent residents coming to Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In its report, <i>Record-High Population Growth Continues, Fuelled By Strong Permanent And Temporary Immigration<\/i>, Statistics Canada noted in mid-December that Canada welcomed 107,972 <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/immigration-au-canada-apercu\/\"><span class=\"s1\">new permanent residents<\/span><\/a> in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cFrom January to September 2023, immigration reached 79.8 per cent, or 371,299 new permanent residents of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada&rsquo;s (IRCC) target of 465,000 immigrants for the year,\u201d noted the statistical and demographic services agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cFrom July 1 to October 1, the country saw the number of non-permanent residents continue to increase. The total non-permanent resident population increased from 2,198,679 to 2,511,437.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s an additional 312,758 temporary residents during the third quarter alone, the greatest quarterly increase going back to 1971 when data on non-permanent residents became available.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Watch Video<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><iframe title=\"YouTube class=\"p1\">The gain in temporary residents was mostly due to an increase in the number of work and study permit holders and, to a lesser extent, an increase in the number of refugee claimants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Although Canada\u2019s record-breaking immigration fuelled population growth in all provinces and territories except the Northwest Territories during the third quarter of this year, some provinces grew faster than others.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Alberta, PEI Ontario Grew Faster Than The National Average In Q3<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cPopulation growth rates in the third quarter of 2023 exceeded the national level of 1.1 per cent in Alberta which grew at 1.3 per cent, Prince Edward Island which grew at 1.2 per cent and Ontario which grew at 1.2 per cent,\u201d reports Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe population grew in all provinces and territories, except in the Northwest Territories which saw a drop of half a percentage point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">During the first nine months of 2023, Canada&rsquo;s population grew by 1,030,378 people, more than the growth for any full-year period since Confederation in 1867, including 2022, when there was a record growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Under the\u00a0<i>2024-2026\u00a0Immigration\u00a0Levels\u00a0Plan<\/i>, Canada is planning to welcome 485,000 new permanent residents in 2024, another 500,000 in 2025 and then hold the line on\u00a0immigration\u00a0in 2026 with another 500,000 newcomers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s a total of\u00a01.485\u00a0million\u00a0immigrants\u00a0to Canada over those three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Canada operates a two-tier immigration system which allows foreign nationals to gain their permanent residency through the federal <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-express-entry-immigration\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Express Entry<\/span><\/a> system\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/travailleurs-qualifies-vue-densemble\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Federal Skilled Worker<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FSW) program,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/programme-des-travailleurs-de-metiers-specialises\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Federal Skilled Trades<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FST) program and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/categorie-de-lexperience-canadienne\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Canadian Experience Class<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(CEC), as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/appercu-des-programmes-des-candidats-des-provinces\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Provincial Nominee Programs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(PNP) of the 10 Canadian
