{"id":13093,"date":"2016-08-26T00:19:05","date_gmt":"2016-08-26T00:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/fr\/educators-concerned-international-student\/"},"modified":"2016-12-15T18:12:36","modified_gmt":"2016-12-15T18:12:36","slug":"educators-concerned-international-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/educators-concerned-international-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Educators Concerned By New International Student Visa Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian universities and language schools have raised concerns over the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canadian-government-closes-loophole-international-student-visa-system-audio\/\">recent visa change<\/a>\u00a0made by the federal government for international students who need to complete a language or other prerequisite course.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8391 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Canada-Border-Service-e1471875774978-300x229.png\" alt=\"Educators Concerned By New International Student Visa Rules\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Canada-Border-Service-e1471875774978-300x229.png 300w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Canada-Border-Service-e1471875774978-245x187.png 245w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Canada-Border-Service-e1471875774978.png 362w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Under new rules, students will need an initial visa for the duration of the language course, before applying again for a second visa for their main course of study.<\/p>\n<p>Previously one visa was issued to cover everything, but it meant students could remain in Canada and work even if they didn\u2019t complete the prerequisite course.<\/p>\n<p>Now educators are worried that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has inserted another administrative layer which could mean delays and processing problems.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Study in Canada: The Four Main Steps<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Find a university or college program<\/li>\n<li>Get admission<\/li>\n<li>Send your admission approval letter to immigration.ca.<\/li>\n<li>Immigration.ca\u2019s experts will help you apply for a study visa<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For more information, click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/steps-to-study-in-canada\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>For example, if a student completed a summer language course, the IRCC would need to issue a second visa in a matter of weeks for a university course that started in September.<\/p>\n<p>Schools are worried over whether the immigration department has the resources to do this, saying the move feels like a backwards step.<\/p>\n<p>With between 10,000 and 11,000 students needing to complete a prerequisite course each year, it creates a pile of new paperwork for students, schools and immigration officers.<\/p>\n<p>Educators feel they should have been consulted before the change was made, although they were happy to reserve judgment until seeing the new system in practice.<\/p>\n<p>The IRCC says issuing the single visa also posed a paperwork problem, as the prerequisite class and chosen course were often not provided by the same institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA concern has been raised by officers that the student may not successfully complete their prerequisite program, but will continue to hold a valid study permit allowing them to work,\u201d a July IRCC statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian government is planning to make it easier for international students to remain in the country and begin their careers after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Completing a post-secondary degree in Canada is expected to be given more weight under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/express-entry-immigration-2016\/\">Express Entry system<\/a>, through which candidates are invited to apply for permanent residency.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, international students will most likely have to return to their original countries following graduation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational students are at the top of the government\u2019s list to become permanent residents because they are young, educated, and fluent in English or French,\u201d Immigration Minister John McCallum said at a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-visit-visa-government-aims-speed-application-process-audio\/\">recent round table discussion<\/a>\u00a0in Peel, Ontario.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interested employers:\u00a0<\/strong>Kindly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-employers\/\">contact us<\/a>\u00a0here to receive further information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interested candidates:<\/strong>\u00a0Find out whether you qualify to Canada by completing our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/free-immigration-evaluation-forms\/\">free on-line evaluation<\/a>.
