{"id":129592,"date":"2023-11-06T11:15:20","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T16:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-extends-special-temporary-measures-for-sudanese-nationals\/"},"modified":"2023-11-06T11:15:20","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T16:15:20","slug":"canada-extends-special-temporary-measures-for-sudanese-nationals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-extends-special-temporary-measures-for-sudanese-nationals\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Extends Special Temporary Measures For\u00a0Sudanese\u00a0Nationals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Ottawa is extending temporary measures to help\u00a0Sudanese\u00a0nationals in Canada for another year by allowing them to continue to extend their stay or change their statuses as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/visa-canadien-temporaire-apercu\/\"><span class=\"s1\">visitors<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/etudier-au-canada-etre-admis-une-universite-ou-un-college-canadien\/\"><span class=\"s1\">students<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/visa-de-travail-canadien-travailler-au-canada\/\"><span class=\"s1\">temporary workers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0free of charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are extending these temporary special measures for foreign nationals who fled Sudan with their Canadian family members, including Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents, until Oct. 27, 2024,\u201d tweeted Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fighting erupted in Khartoum,\u00a0Sudan\u2019s capital city and other sites across that country, in April as two rival military factions began their battle for control of the eastern African nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Although both warring parties resumed negotiations to end the war last week, it has already claimed more than 9,000 lives, including more than 410 civilians, and displaced an estimated 5.6 million people since April. That\u2019s why we\u2019re taking steps to help them extend their stay here, so they can remain with their families, continue with their studies or find work in safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Under the temporary measures in place for Sudanese nationals in Canada who left after the conflict began and entered Canada before July 15 this year is the ability for them to extend their temporary resident statuses or apply for other temporary resident documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019re prioritizing the processing of complete temporary and permanent residence applications from those living in Sudan,\u201d notes the IRCC on its website. \u201cIf you have an application in progress, you don\u2019t need to apply again.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Watch video:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/idtvro_L3NY?si=YNfe3PbTLPF0LMhr\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is offering free\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/open-work-permit-in-canada\/\"><span class=\"s1\">open work permits<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that provide access to the labour market and greater flexibility for\u00a0Sudanese\u00a0nationals to support themselves while they are in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These measures, which took effect Apr. 30, were anticipated as the immigration minister had already alluded to them prior to putting them in effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Some Sudanese permanent residence applicants outside Canada might not have access to their\u00a0Sudanese\u00a0travel documents, so the IRCC is making a special allowance for that.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Canada Waives Passport Requirements For Sudanese Applicants<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are therefore waiving the requirement to hold a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canadian-passports-power-gains-one-point-on-index\/\"><span class=\"s1\">passport<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or travel document to be approved for a permanent resident visa to come to Canada,\u201d notes the IRCC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Thousands of foreign nationals, diplomats and aid workers are stranded in Sudan. The embassies of the United Kingdom, United States, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states have either been closed or are closing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s a step Canada has also taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Global Affairs Canada announced it was suspending all its operations in\u00a0Sudan on Apr. 23 this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAfter consulting with Canada\u2019s ambassador to\u00a0Sudan, the decision has been made to temporarily suspend our operations in\u00a0Sudan,\u201d noted Global Affair Canada in a statement earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCanadian diplomats will temporarily work from a safe location outside of the country. They will continue working with the government of\u00a0Sudan, neighbouring countries, as well as with like-minded governments and the international community to coordinate the response to this crisis and to support Canadians still in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Global Affairs Canada has also put out a call for an immediate ceasefire and the start of mediation efforts supported by regional partners in\u00a0Sudan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe Canadian embassy will resume operations in Khartoum as soon as the situation in\u00a0Sudan\u00a0allows us to guarantee proper service and the safety and security for our staff,\u201d noted Global Affairs Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhile operations are suspended in Khartoum, limited consular services continue to be provided. Officials in Ottawa are in regular contact with Canadians affected, providing them information and advice as the situation develops. Canadian officials in our missions in nearby countries also stand ready to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThese measures complement the fee waivers for passports and travel documents for Canadians and permanent residents of Canada in\u00a0Sudan, and the prioritization of completed applications already in our system for temporary and permanent residence from people in\u00a0Sudan\u00a0for when it is safe to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Canadians in\u00a0Sudan\u00a0are advised to check\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">travel.gc.ca\u00a0<\/span><\/a>as often as possible for updates and to sign up with the federal government\u2019s\u00a0Registration of Canadians Abroad\u00a0service to receive direct updates.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Canadians In Sudan Advised To Contact Global Affairs Canada<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Canadian citizens, permanent residents and family members who want to leave\u00a0Sudan\u00a0can contact Global Affairs Canada&rsquo;s Emergency Watch and Response Centre<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">by calling +1 613-996-8885<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">by text message at +1 613-686-3658<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">via WhatsApp at +1 613-909-8881<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">via Telegram at Canada Emergency Abroad<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\">by email at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:sos@international.gc.ca\"><span class=\"s1\">sos@international.gc.ca<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has also issued a temporary halt on removals to\u00a0Sudan.
