Even with a projected 6,100 immigrants landing Canada jobs<\/span><\/a> as residential and commercial installers and servicers in Canada over the coming nine years, the country will still suffer from a shortage of these workers, reports the Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS).<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough the labour shortage conditions seen in recent years were expected to be temporary, the projected number of job seekers is not expected to be large enough to return this occupation to balance conditions over the projection period,\u201d notes the COPS website.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result, the shortage conditions will become more structural, continuing over the 2022 – 2031 period.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) changing\u00a0Canada\u2019s Express Entry system to allow it to target 82 jobs in healthcare, technology, trades, transport and agriculture this summer \u2013 including residential and commercial installers and servicers – it opened the door to a new pathway to immigration for them.<\/p>\n

The flagship Express Entry selection system had previously only conducted draws based on\u00a0immigration\u00a0programs, not by targeting specific occupations.<\/p>\n

Ottawa made the changes to help resolve serious labour shortages in Canada, providing an opportunity for qualified foreign nationals to gain their\u00a0permanent residence<\/span><\/a>\u00a0here through occupation-targeted\u00a0Express Entry<\/span><\/a>\u00a0system draws.<\/p>\n

Job Bank, a federal job-hunting and career-planning website, pegs the median hourly wage for residential and commercial installers and servicers in Canada, \u00a0categorized under the\u00a0National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021<\/span><\/a>\u00a0system with the code 73200, at $24 but that varies from a low of $17 right up\u00a0to\u00a0$35.50<\/p>\n

Based on a standard, 37.5-hour work week, that means residential and commercial installers and servicers can expect\u00a0to\u00a0earn up\u00a0to\u00a0$69,225 per year in Canada.<\/p>\n

In mid-September, the job-hunting website listed 469 jobs for these workers across Canada, most of them in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and, to a lesser extent, Quebec. Job Bank ranked the job prospects for these workers over the next three years as good in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n

Candidates hoping to immigrate through Express Entry occupation-targeted draws need at least six months of continuous work experience in Canada or abroad within the past three years in one of these occupations\u00a0to\u00a0be eligible, experience that can have been gained while working in Canada as temporary foreign workers with a\u00a0work permits<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or as an international student with a\u00a0student visa<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ottawa Hoping Occupation-Targeted Draws Will Help Resolve Labour Shortages<\/b><\/p>\n

Under the changes announced at the end of May, the Express Entry streams, including the\u00a0Federal Skilled Worker<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FSW) program,\u00a0Federal Skilled Trades<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FST) program and\u00a0Canadian Experience Class<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(CEC), as well as parts of the\u00a0Provincial Nominee Programs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(PNP) are now more responsive\u00a0to\u00a0labour market needs.<\/p>\n

Canada first signalled its intention\u00a0to\u00a0start occupation-specific draws through Express Entry in June last year, when changes were made\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Immigration, Refugee and Protection Act<\/i>\u00a0to\u00a0allow invitations based on occupations and other attributes, such as language ability.<\/p>\n

The majority of Canada\u2019s provinces have been issuing occupation-specific invitations for several years.<\/p>\n
