Thousands more air traffic controller Canada jobs<\/span><\/a> are forecast to come up for grabs in the next nine years than there will be qualified people to fill them, providing an opportunity for qualified foreign nationals to gain their\u00a0permanent residence<\/span><\/a>\u00a0here through occupation-targeted\u00a0Express Entry<\/span><\/a>\u00a0system draws.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor transportation officers and controllers, over the period 2022-2031, new job openings arising from expansion demand and replacement demand are expected to total 17,100, while 11,100 new job seekers arising from school leavers, immigration and mobility are expected to be available to fill them,\u201d notes Job Bank, the federal job-hunting and career-planning website.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the quick post-pandemic demand recovery for this occupational group, the projected number of job openings is expected to substantially surpass the projected number of job seekers, significantly enough to not only eliminate the temporary surplus situation seen over the 2019-2021 period, but to also turn it around to a shortage situation over the 2022-2031 period.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a shortfall of 6,000 jobs foreign nationals can apply to get and so qualify for permanent residence to Canada under Express Entry draws.<\/p>\n

When Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced Canada\u2019s Express Entry system would begin targeting 82 jobs in healthcare, technology, trades, transport and agriculture this summer \u2013 including\u00a0air traffic controllers, it opened the door to a new pathway to immigration for them.<\/p>\n

The flagship Express Entry selection system had previously only conducted draws based on\u00a0immigration\u00a0programs, not by targeting specific occupations.<\/p>\n

Candidates hoping to immigrate through Express Entry occupation-targeted draws will need at least six months of continuous work experience in Canada or abroad within the past three years in one of these occupations\u00a0to\u00a0be eligible, experience that can have been gained while working in Canada as temporary foreign workers with a\u00a0work permits<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or as an international student with a\u00a0student visa<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Air traffic controllers, categorized under the\u00a0National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021<\/span><\/a>\u00a0system with the code 72601, direct air traffic within assigned airspace, and control moving aircraft and service vehicles at airports.<\/p>\n

The Job Bank federal job-hunting and career-planning website gives a ranking of good for the job prospects of these workers in the Yukon, British Columbia, Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador over the next three years.<\/p>\n

The median hourly wage for air traffic controllers in Canada is $45 but that varies from a low of $20.60 right up\u00a0to\u00a0$85, reveals Job Bank.<\/p>\n

Based on a standard, 37.5-hour work week, that means air traffic controllers can expect\u00a0to\u00a0earn up\u00a0to\u00a0$165,750 per year in Canada.<\/p>\n

Under the changes announced at the end of May, the Express Entry streams, including the\u00a0Federal Skilled Worker<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FSW) program,\u00a0Federal Skilled Trades<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FST) program and\u00a0Canadian Experience Class<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(CEC), as well as parts of the\u00a0Provincial Nominee Programs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(PNP) are now more responsive\u00a0to\u00a0labour market needs.<\/p>\n

Canada first signalled its intention\u00a0to\u00a0start occupation-specific draws through Express Entry in June last year, when changes were made\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Immigration, Refugee and Protection Act<\/i>\u00a0to\u00a0allow invitations based on occupations and other attributes, such as language ability.<\/p>\n

The majority of Canada\u2019s provinces have been issuing occupation-specific invitations for several years.<\/p>\n
