I\u2019ve also seen the importance of virtually, when there\u2019s no question about someone\u2019s loyalty or citizenship or oath or the seriousness he should take the Canadian citizenship,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s about keeping the options open in the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Watch video:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/idtvro_L3NY?si=YNfe3PbTLPF0LMhr\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">As someone who has administered the oath thrice in the past, Miller believes the in-person option as \u201cparamount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, the number of people opting in for it is expected to drop with the advent of an in-person option. Conservatives oppose this possible \u201ccheapening\u201d of the citizenship oath, asserting \u2013 via Conservative immigration critic Tom Kmiec \u2013 that the government wants to \u201creduce it all to a click on a website or an app as if citizenship were no more than consenting to terms in a contract.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe Trudeau Liberals are abandoning this special tradition and reducing our citizens to a bureaucratic number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Other critics were concerned about the possibility of fraud, despite government plans to use a secure web portal for one-click oaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite the introduction of a virtual ceremony due to the pandemic, a backlog of 68,287 people remains as of July 23.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada\u2019s Immigration Minister Marc Miller has said that the department is still considering the implementation of the controversial one-click citizenship oath in place of virtual or in-person ceremonies.
