{"id":127506,"date":"2023-09-26T12:41:19","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T16:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canada-close-to-reaching-its-target-of-40000-afghan-refugees-finding-a-safe-haven-here\/"},"modified":"2023-09-26T13:05:38","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T17:05:38","slug":"canada-close-to-reaching-its-target-of-40000-afghan-refugees-finding-a-safe-haven-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/canada-close-to-reaching-its-target-of-40000-afghan-refugees-finding-a-safe-haven-here\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Close To Reaching Its Target Of 40,000 Afghan Refugees Finding A Safe Haven Here"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">With the latest planeload of Afghans fleeing the Taliban and immigrating here as refugees last week, Canada is now within a few thousand people of reaching its goal of providing a safe haven for 40,000 Afghans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cToday, Canada welcomed 218 Afghan nationals to Halifax, where they will continue on to their new homes in approximately 22 communities across this beautiful country, including Halifax, London, Surrey, and Toronto,\u201d tweeted Immigration Minister Marc Miller on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The latest data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveals that Canada has welcomed 37,875 Afghan <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/protection-des-refugies\/\"><span class=\"s1\">refugees<\/span><\/a> since August 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That includes 11,715 Afghans who have arrived in Canada through the special immigration measures set up by Ottawa for those who assisted the Canadian government in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Under those programs, Canada has received 19,650 applications and approved 12,930 of them.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Read More<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/advantages-of-buying-starting-a-business-in-ontario-through-the-oinp-entrepreneur-success-initiative\/\">Advantages of Buying or Starting a Business in Ontario Through the OINP Entrepreneur Success Initiative<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/saskatchewan-issues-23-itas-to-immigrate-to-canada-in-entrepreneur-draw\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Saskatchewan Issues 23 ITAs To Immigrate To Canada In Entrepreneur Draw<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/manitoba-issues-558-canada-immigration-invitations-in-new-pnp-draw\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Manitoba Issues 558 Canada Immigration Invitations In New PNP Draw<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAfghan nationals arriving through the humanitarian program fall under the government-assisted refugee and privately sponsored refugee programs,\u201d notes the IRCC website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019re working with trusted international and Canadian partners to implement this new humanitarian program. Afghan nationals don\u2019t apply directly to us for this program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So far, 19,575 Afghans have immigrated to Canada under this humanitarian program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Under Canada\u2019s humanitarian resettlement program, those deemed to be the most vulnerable among Afghans, including women leaders, human rights defenders, persecuted and religious minorities, 2SLGBTQI+ individuals and journalists, are given priority.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Video<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" the\u00a0Afghanistan\u00a0resettlement effort is one of the largest and most difficult in Canada\u2019s history, we remain committed to maximizing every opportunity to support these vulnerable\u00a0Afghans\u00a0in their transition to a better life in Canada,\u201d said former Immigration Minister Sean Fraser when the program was rolled out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is also a pathway to permanent residence for extended family members of former interpreters for the Canadian government who are already in Canada and have resettled here under public policies from 2009 or 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So far, 2,485 extended family members of Afghans have immigrated to Canada through that pathway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The IRCC developed several special programs and measures to bring\u00a0Afghans\u00a0to Canada out of recognition for the help they provided during Canada\u2019s combat role and, later, its peacekeeping missions in\u00a0Afghanistan\u00a0from 2001 through to 2021.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Taliban Takeover Of Afghanistan Forced Many Afghans To Flee For Their Lives<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">During those missions,\u00a0158 Canadian Armed Forces members died in the cause of peace and freedom in\u00a0Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After the Taliban fundamentalist Islamic group finally seized control of the country in mid-August, 2021, many\u00a0Afghans\u00a0sought to escape out of fear of retribution for their help of Canada\u2019s missions and support for western democratic freedoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The IRCC has made it easier to sponsor\u00a0Afghan\u00a0refugees\u00a0through the humanitarian program, allowing groups of five and community sponsors to\u00a0sponsor\u00a0Afghan\u00a0refugees\u00a0without having to submit a\u00a0refugee\u00a0status determination document\u00a0if this document isn\u2019t available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe safe and dignified resettlement of refugees globally has been a central part of International Organization for Migration\u2019s (IOM) work for more than 70 years and we are proud to be part of Canada\u2019s efforts to provide a new home for tens of thousands of vulnerable\u00a0Afghans,\u201d said IOM director general Ant\u00f3nio Vitorino.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As they have arrived in Canada, the\u00a0Afghan\u00a0refugees have been welcomed in communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Canada, one of the first countries to launch a special humanitarian resettlement program for vulnerable\u00a0Afghans, is also welcoming up to 5,000 extended family members of\u00a0Afghan\u00a0interpreters who came to Canada as part of earlier programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Upon their arrival in Canada, the\u00a0Afghan\u00a0refugees\u00a0get a minimum of 12 months of income support under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/resettlement-assistance-program-income-support-payments-for-privately-sponsored-refugees-arriving-under-the-visa-office-referred-program\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Resettlement Assistance Program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(RAP) and also have access to settlement services, including language training and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/the-interim-federal-health-program-ifhp\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Interim Federal Health Program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for medical
