Canada will hold its first occupation-targeted Express Entry<\/span><\/a> draw for transport Canada jobs<\/span><\/a>, including truck drivers<\/span><\/a>, this week, says Immigration Minister Marc Miller.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Canada grows its economy, we\u2019re committed to improving transport and infrastructure to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods and passengers across the country,\u201d said Miller.<\/p>\n

\u201cCategory-based selection helps us invite newcomers with experience in transport occupations to fill significant labour gaps and ensure the future success of the Canadian transport sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look forward to welcoming more skilled workers to our country, as their knowledge and expertise are invaluable, to meet our labour market needs.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Details of this draw had yet to be announced on Monday but the immigration minister did state the draw would see commercial truck drivers, pilots and aircraft assembly workers sent Invitations to Apply (ITA).<\/p>\n

Under the changes announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) at the end of May, the Express Entry streams, including the\u00a0Federal Skilled Worker<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FSW) program,\u00a0Federal Skilled Trades<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(FST) program and\u00a0Canadian Experience Class<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(CEC), as well as parts of the\u00a0Provincial Nominee Programs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(PNP) are now more responsive\u00a0to\u00a0labour market needs and allow for occupation-targeted draws.<\/p>\n

Candidates hoping to immigrate through Express Entry occupation-targeted draws need at least six months of continuous work experience in Canada or abroad within the past three years in one of these occupations\u00a0to\u00a0be eligible, experience that can have been gained while working in Canada as temporary foreign workers with a\u00a0work permits<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or as an international student with a\u00a0student visa<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The changes to Canada\u2019s immigration policies were put in place to help the country address labour shortages and support economic goals by inviting candidates with specific work experience or French language ability to apply for permanent residence.<\/p>\n

Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez says it is vital for Canada\u2019s economic growth to keep goods flowing freely.<\/p>\n

Canada first signalled its intention\u00a0to\u00a0start occupation-specific draws through Express Entry in June last year, when changes were made\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Immigration, Refugee and Protection Act<\/i>\u00a0to\u00a0allow invitations based on occupations and other attributes, such as language ability.<\/p>\n

Federal High-Skilled Draws Brought In Up To 40 Per Cent Of French-Speaking Immigrants<\/h3>\n

The majority of Canada\u2019s provinces have been issuing occupation-specific invitations for several years.<\/p>\n

Under the changes\u00a0to\u00a0the act, the\u00a0immigration\u00a0minister is required\u00a0to\u00a0consult provinces and territories, members of industry, unions, employers, workers, worker advocacy groups, settlement provider organizations, and\u00a0immigration\u00a0researchers and practitioners, before announcing new categories.<\/p>\n

IRCC must also report\u00a0to\u00a0parliament each year on the categories that were chosen and the reason for the choices.<\/p>\n
