Canada is launching a new immigration initiative dubbed the Tech Talent Strategy to lure temporary workers<\/a> in the tech sector in the United States north of the border to fill Canada jobs<\/a> going begging for a want of qualified employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re enthusiastic about the ambitious goals we have set in immigration because they aren\u2019t just about numbers. They are strategic,\u201d said Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith Canada\u2019s first-ever immigration Tech Talent Strategy, we\u2019re targeting newcomers that can help enshrine Canada as a world leader in a variety of emerging technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tech Talent Strategy will lead to the creation by July 16 of an open work permit<\/a> stream for foreign nationals working in the United States with H-1B visas.<\/p>\n

The visa is widely used by Silicon Valley companies to bring in highly-skilled immigrants.<\/p>\n

That stream will also provide work<\/a> and study permit<\/a> options for the workers\u2019 family members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This measure is to remain in effect for one year, or until Canada\u2019s immigration department receives 10,000 applications, with only principal applicants and not their accompanying family members counting towards the application cap.<\/p>\n
