{"id":11340,"date":"2016-09-19T20:29:31","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T20:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/fr\/?p=11340"},"modified":"2016-09-19T20:29:31","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T20:29:31","slug":"jason-kenney-niqab-comment-fuels-social-media-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/jason-kenney-niqab-comment-fuels-social-media-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Jason Kenney Niqab Comment Fuels Social Media Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several Twitter users are showing support for Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi in a social media war of words with Conservative candidate Jason Kenney.<\/p>\n<p>Nenshi has voiced objection to the Conservatives&rsquo; position that women should be prevented from wearing niqabs during citizenship ceremonies.\u00a0 The highly popular Mayor of Calgary has termed the politics surrounding the debate \u00ab\u00a0disgusting\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0unbelievably dangerous stuff\u00a0\u00bb in a Sirius XM radio interview with Evan Solomon last week. Jason Kenney responded in an interview with Post media saying, \u00ab\u00a0it seems to me that it&rsquo;s the mayor and people like him who are politicizing it.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/images\/pics\/ban-on-face-covering-canada.jpg\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nenshi&rsquo;s tweet quickly received more than 1,000 retweets with many pledging support for the Calgary mayor, using the hash tag #PeopleLikeNenshi.\u00a0 The hash tag quickly rose up the trending lists, with more than 3,500 entries in 12 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Several NDP and Liberal politicians, including Justin Trudeau, also tweeted their support while others defended Kenney claiming his comments were being read out of context.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Kenney later denied that his comment had anything to do with Nenshi&rsquo;s religion or ethnicity saying it was \u00ab\u00a0completely ridiculous\u00a0\u00bb to suggest that his comments were about religion or ethnicity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several Twitter users are showing support for Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi in a social media war of words with Conservative candidate Jason Kenney.
