Each agency is plunking down about $500,000.<\/p>\n<p>REGI is a national innovation program to grow regional industrial and technology clusters and regional innovation ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government of Canada, through ACOA, is proud to support projects like Opportunities NB\u2019s Study and Succeed initiative that provide international graduate students with the tools, training, and professional contacts they need to stay in New Brunswick,\u201d said Fredericton MP Jenica Atwin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy creating the right networks and opportunities, we are fostering inclusion and strengthening our vibrant, diverse communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move by New Brunswick to retain more of its international students comes in the wake of a Conference Board of Canada report late last year which called on Ottawa to boost the number of international students the provinces can nominate through their <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/appercu-des-programmes-des-candidats-des-provinces\/\">Provincial Nominee Programs<\/a>\u00a0(PNP).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PNP is the most common way that former\u00a0international\u00a0students\u00a0become permanent residents,\u201d noted the non-profit think tank in its report,\u00a0<i>After School: Keeping\u00a0International\u00a0Students\u00a0In Province.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn increase in PNP slots\u00a0for\u00a0international\u00a0students\u00a0can make it easier\u00a0for\u00a0them to stay in Canada, which can facilitate retention in provinces of study.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Provinces Urged To Put More Settlement Services In Place For Students<\/h3>\n<p>The Conference Board of Canada also highlighted in that report the importance of improved settlement services offered by the provinces, such as New Brunswick is now doing, to help\u00a0international\u00a0students\u00a0seeking their permanent residence in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe post-study period can be precarious.\u00a0International\u00a0students\u00a0are navigating the transition to the labour market and the immigration system without access to federally-funded settlement services,\u201d noted the Conference Board of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProvinces can boost retention by ensuring that\u00a0international\u00a0students\u00a0get support from their post-secondary institution and from provincially funded settlement services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn early investment from provincial governments in the success of\u00a0international\u00a0students\u00a0will help them build a career and community connections, which will ultimately benefit retention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Universities and colleges in Canada enjoy a very solid reputation throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>In the ninth annual Best\u00a0Global\u00a0Universities ranking of 2,000 of these educational institutions throughout the world, three Canadian universities \u2013 the University of Toronto (UofT), the University of British Columbia (UBC), and McGill University \u2013 placed among the 100 best.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Video<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JTobchIUqnk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>And another 15 Canadian universities made it into the top quarter of the 2,000 best universities ranked.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Toronto was ranked 18<sup>th<\/sup>. UBC placed 35<sup>th<\/sup>. McGill University was deemed the third-best university in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>As last year drew to a close, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data offered a glimpse of the massive potential to increase immigration to the country through better programs to retain\u00a0international\u00a0students.<\/p>\n<p>That IRCC data shows Canada was on track to set a new record\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/visa-etudiant-canada\/\">study permits<\/a>\u00a0issued in 2022 with 418,260\u00a0international\u00a0students\u00a0having been given one of these permits in the first nine months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Based on that current trend, Canada was then on track to close 2022 with 557,680 study permits issued. That would be 113,200 study permits, or almost 25.5 per cent, more than the 444,480 issued in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2015, the number of study permits issued to\u00a0international\u00a0students\u00a0coming to Canada has more than doubled, soaring from 219,035 during that year to record-breaking levels today.<\/p>\n<h3>Study Permits Allow International Students To Work While In Canada<\/h3>\n<p>A study permit, once issued, allows a\u00a0foreign\u00a0national to study in Canada at an approved institute\u00a0for\u00a0the duration of the specified course or program.<\/p>\n<p>There are exceptions.\u00a0Foreign\u00a0nationals do not require a study permit to go to school in Canada under the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the course or program of study is less than six months in duration;<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0student\u00a0is a family member or staff of a\u00a0foreign\u00a0representative to Canada, or;<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0student\u00a0is a member of a\u00a0foreign\u00a0armed force.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To be eligible to study in Canada\u00a0students\u00a0must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have been accepted by a school,\u00a0college,\u00a0university\u00a0or other educational institution in Canada;<\/li>\n<li>have proven they have enough money to pay\u00a0for\u00a0their tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation\u00a0for\u00a0themselves and any family members who come with them to Canada.<\/li>\n<li>be law-abiding citizens with no criminal record and not a risk to the security of Canada. They may have to provide a police certificate;<\/li>\n<li>be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary, and;<\/li>\n<li>satisfy an immigration officer they will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/visa-de-visiteur-au-canada-apercu\/\">Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)<\/a>\u00a0may also be required if the\u00a0student\u00a0is a citizen of a country from which such visas are required\u00a0for\u00a0entry into\u00a0Canada. This is not required\u00a0for\u00a0citizens of<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/visa-de-visiteur-au-canada-apercu\/\">\u00a0visa-exempt countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IRCC allows\u00a0students\u00a0to work while studying in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0student\u00a0may be able to work in Canada during his or her studies under the following categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/travailler-etudier-au-canada\/\">On campus without a Work Permit;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/travailler-etudier-au-canada\/\">Off campus with a Work Permit<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/etudier-au-canada-stages-et-enseignement-cooperatif-au-canada\/\">Co-op and Internship Programs<\/a>, where work experience is part of the curriculum, with a Work Permit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spouses or common-law partners of\u00a0foreign\u00a0students\u00a0are also eligible\u00a0for\u00a0work permits\u00a0for\u00a0the duration of the study permit.<\/p>\n<p>Upon graduation, a\u00a0foreign\u00a0student\u00a0may apply\u00a0for\u00a0a work permit under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/post-graduation-work-permit\/\">Post-Graduation Work Permit Program<\/a>.
