Mexico Finance Minister Luis Videgaray is predicting a better relationship with Canada could be one of the positive outcomes if Donald Trump is elected president of the USA.<\/p>\n

Videgaray believes the countries immediately north and south of the US could see enhanced trade and investment should Trump put into practice some of the policies he has spoken of if he makes it to the White House.<\/p>\n

Reality TV star Trump has vowed to make Mexico pay for a wall along the US border if he beats Hillary Clinton to in the November election.<\/p>\n

He also calls the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which governs trade between the two nations and Canada, \u2018the worst trade deal ever done\u2019 and says he will rip it up<\/a> if he becomes president.<\/p>\n

Videgaray says the breakdown of Mexico\u2019s relationship with the US would see it open up to the rest of the world, including Canada.<\/p>\n

Canada-Mexico relations have been strained since a visa restriction was imposed by the Conservatives in 2009 because of the overwhelming number of asylum claims. The number of claims dropped from 9,000 to 1,199 as a result of the move, with associated costs falling from $304 million to $44 million.<\/p>\n

However, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada estimates $465 million was lost as a result of the restriction.<\/p>\n

The Liberals said it would lift the visa requirement<\/a> as part of its winning campaign in Canada\u2019s 2015 election, although there has been no action on that front.<\/p>\n

It had been suggested Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto would refuse to attend a summit<\/a> with Justin Trudeau and Barack Obama in Ottawa at the end of this month unless the restriction was lifted.<\/p>\n

Now Nieto will not only attend but also conduct a three-day state visit ahead of the June 29 meeting, suggesting he has received assurances the restriction will soon be quashed.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s rise to become the presumptive Republican nominee and a serious challenger to Clinton has shocked observers in the US.<\/p>\n

Many have threatened to leave the country and move to Canada should he become president.<\/p>\n

Following Trump\u2019s Super Tuesday success, when he won a swathe of states in the Republican nomination battle, Google searches for \u2018move to Canada\u2019 spiked dramatically.<\/p>\n
