It is intended to close a security gap that has previously been exposed when Canadian citizens have joined terrorist groups abroad without being tracked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">Privacy groups have voiced concerns yet many other western countries including the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand already keep a record of who leaves. Canada has an intelligence sharing agreement with these four nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">Although the new legislation is unlikely to be made law until the fall at the earliest, privacy experts want to see careful controls over what information and how it will be shared between the border authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quick Facts: The Canada-US Border<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">Longest international border in world at\u00a0<strong>8,891km<\/strong>, 2,475km of which is with Alaska<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>3.3 million<\/strong>\u00a0Canadians travelled to the USA in February 2016, with\u00a0<strong>2 million<\/strong>\u00a0moving in the other direction<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>400,000<\/strong>\u00a0people and\u00a0<strong>$2.4 billion<\/strong>\u00a0in trade cross the border each day<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">Canada and US are\u00a0<strong>second<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>fourth<\/strong>\u00a0largest countries in the world by area<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">Canadian provinces and territories on border:\u00a0<strong>Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">US states on border:\u00a0<strong>Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.16px; line-height: 1.3em;\">Concerns have also been expressed over which agencies in Canada will have access to the information, including the Canada Revenue Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">Canadians were warned recently about keeping track of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/canadians-must-careful-long-spend-usa-audio\/\"><span class=\"s2\">how much time they spend in the US<\/span><\/a>\u00a0because of tax implications if limits are exceeded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">The current limit is 120 days averaged over three years. An application can be filed to extend that to 182 days, provided certain conditions are met.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">Those exceeding the yearly limit face being considered a US resident, and having to pay the resultant taxes.
