More and more Filipinos are swapping the US for Canada as their target country for immigration.<\/p>\n

While America still dominates, the recent trend shows Canada is becoming a more popular option for hoards of Philippines overseas workers.<\/p>\n

\"Filipinos<\/p>\n

The wait for US immigration can be up to 25 years, meaning Canada\u2019s Express Entry System<\/a> is a big draw for those looking to move sooner.<\/p>\n

And Filipinos who do not qualify for immediate permanent residency are taking the indirect route by coming into the country as temporary workers<\/a> or international students<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a result, in 2014 Canada had more permanent residents from the Philippines than any other country with more than 40,000.<\/p>\n

\"Canada's<\/p>\n

The number of TFWs in Canada is dominated by Filipinos, peaking at more than 51,000 in 2009, and standing at just under 40,000 in 2014. These numbers dwarf the second largest nationality, India, which had just under 6,250 TFWs in 2014.<\/p>\n

Several of the TFWs displaced by the Fort McMurray wildfire<\/a> were from the Philippines.<\/p>\n

\"Canada's<\/p>\n

While the Philippines is far short of the top five when it comes to international student visas, the numbers are growing, from just over 500 in 2005 to a peak of 2,000 in 2013.\u00a0 China is the clear leader in this group with nearly 111,000 students as of 2014.<\/p>\n

Filipinos are also finding their way to Canadian citizenship, beating Indians and Chinese into second and third place with nearly 30,000 new citizens in 2015.<\/p>\n
