{"id":10644,"date":"2016-09-08T16:01:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T16:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/immigrationca.staging.wpengine.com\/fr\/?p=10644"},"modified":"2016-09-08T16:01:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T16:01:34","slug":"poor-language-skills-hindering-montreal-immigrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/fr\/poor-language-skills-hindering-montreal-immigrants\/","title":{"rendered":"Poor Language Skills Hindering Montreal Immigrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7817 \" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Montreal-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"Poor Language Skills Hindering Montreal Immigrants\" width=\"279\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Montreal-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Montreal-768x470.jpg 768w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Montreal-280x171.jpg 280w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Montreal.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 279px) 100vw, 279px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Immigrants are under-represented in Montreal\u2019s private sector mainly because of poor language skills.<\/p>\n<p>That is one of the main findings of a new study, which says more needs to be done by both businesses and immigrants to achieve better workforce integration.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal report, entitled \u2018Immigrants: Getting Positioned for Strategic Jobs\u2019, calls on companies to offer language and management style training, mentoring meetings and internal sponsorships to encourage immigrants to apply for executive positions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7818 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/hiring_immigrants.png\" alt=\"What do you think are the main obstacles to hiring immigrants in management positions in Greater Montr\u00e9al? \" width=\"477\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/hiring_immigrants.png 477w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/hiring_immigrants-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/hiring_immigrants-280x175.png 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Better awareness from managers and the appointment of a specific person to help improve communication between immigrants and senior staff are also recommendations of the study.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, immigrants should be regularly seeking feedback to find out where they are going wrong, while also taking their own steps to improve language and consider obtaining a Canadian degree.<\/p>\n<p>The report suggests that while the willingness exists to hire immigrants, businesses require guidance on how to integrate them once they arrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy better equipping immigrant workers and employers, we can ensure that immigrant and non-immigrant workers are on a level playing field,\u201d the report concludes.<\/p>\n<p>The report adds: \u201cIntegration has to be everyone\u2019s concern. Avenues for solutions that come out of this study \u2013 which, we should remember, is the result of a widespread consultation conducted with employers in Greater Montr\u00e9al, immigrant executives, companies that hire immigrants and the team of experts for the Board of Trade\u2019s Interconnection program \u2013 are intended for the city\u2019s employers and immigrant workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Employers were asked what they though the main obstacles were to immigrants getting management jobs in Montreal.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-7819\" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/command.png\" alt=\"Command of French and English\" width=\"540\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/command.png 994w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/command-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/command-768x396.png 768w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/command-280x144.png 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some 22 per cent said a limited command of French was the chief reason, while limited English, cultural barriers and unrecognized education also featured highly.<\/p>\n<p>But 84 per cent of employers gave a positive response when asked if they were willing to hire immigrants.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-7820\" src=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/willingness.png\" alt=\"Willingness of Montreal Businesses to Hire Immigrants\" width=\"495\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/willingness.png 892w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/willingness-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/willingness-768x408.png 768w, https:\/\/immigration.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/willingness-280x149.png 280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u201cAttracting, integrating and retaining immigrants professionally are one of the Greater Montr\u00e9al business community\u2019s top priorities,\u201d said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmigration is a source of labour that is essential to the development of businesses and our collective wealth. We are facing weak growth in the active population and, like many countries with demographic challenges; we have to leverage talent from immigration.
