2019-09-20 – Job vacancies in Canada rose sharply to 581,600 in the second quarter of 2019, up 6.4 per cent on the same period of last year, new figures show.
Quebec accounted for nearly 70 per cent of the Canada-wide increase of 34,800 vacancies, according to Statistics Canada.
It means the number of Canada job vacancies has now risen in each of the last 11 quarters, in most cases outpacing growth in employment.
Canada-wide job vacancies were up by more than 75,000 on the previous quarter, with the number of vacancies above 500,000 in each of the last six quarters. Vacancies were also up in six out of 10 major industrial sectors.
The rise in vacancies between the first and second quarters is a patterned observed every year since 2015, possibly reflecting seasonal recruitment patterns.

Job vacancies increased in four provinces and two territories compared with the same period of 2018.
Quebec was at the forefront, with 24,100 of the Canada-wide 34,800 increase coming in the French-speaking province.
It means vacancies have increased more than 20 percent in Quebec since the same time last year, with the growth widespread across sectors and economic regions.
Over the same period, Quebec unemployment has fallen from 5.3 percent to 4.9 percent.
Despite these figures, the governing Coalition Avenir Quebec is pushing ahead with a plan to reduce skilled worker immigration, at a time when employers are desperate for new staff.
Ontario saw the second largest job vacancy increase, at 7,400, or 3.6 percent compared to the same period of 2018, led by the wholesale trade industry.
Other provinces and territories to see increases were Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, Yukon, and Nunavut.

Looking at job vacancies by industry, growth in the second quarter of 2019 was driven by accommodation and food services; professional, scientific and technical services; and health care and social assistance.
Among the smaller sectors, the number of vacancies increased in agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting, reaching the highest level for this sector since comparable data became available in 2015.
Vacancies also increased in information and cultural industries, mostly in telecommunications and broadcasting.
