My family and I arrived in Alberta from Australia in 2005 - our temporary resident status is current till end of 2007. We applied for PR last year which is now 'in process'. In January of this year I received a job offer and the company was kind enough to go through the rigorous process of applying to Human Resources for approval. It's been over 3 months and still waiting. My questions are:
1.I understand from the immigration website, contrary to what I was told over the phone, that I can apply for a work permit from within Canada as distinct from going through a consulate in the US. Is this correct?
2. Are there advantages in applying from within Canada ie quicker processing times?
3. I have a file no. from Human Resources so can I apply for my work permit before approval from HR so as to get the ball rolling?
4. I will be the only one working initially so do I still need photos for everyone in my family with the application?
I think it is always better to appply from within Canada than outside, if you can.
I think there is a process called simultaneous processing where you can apply for Work Permit while your LMO is in process but I couldn't find information about it. Cheers!!
Hi guys there has been a new process for WP where you can apply for you WP as the employer applies for the LMO - as they both take similar amount of time the idea is that as one is approved then the other is also - therefore in effect cutting the waiting time in half.
As this is a new process (think it started in April) no one knows if in fact this is going to be the case.
Think that this new process is good for the medical/education foreign workers as whilst the LMO is being dealt with then CHC can start doing the meds etc ready to approve WP on the basis of the LMO decision - I know that some people in those professions have waited stupid amounts of time to get to WP stage.
Hope that this helps the OP

PS you dont need to have photos done for a WP or SOWP
